Wireless Networking Ubuntu 12.04

Yup, I upgraded to Ubuntu Unity 12.04. Wireless networking isn’t working quite yet. Not sure what’s going on. I followed the same steps I have had to with the machine in the past and still nothing. We’ll see what happens. But for now, it appears that it just doesn’t like me. I’ll have to do some more searching in order to find the best answer to fix this problem. But for now, I’ll have to keep it wired.

ColdFusion

So recently, I decided to include ColdFusion in my Linux setup. I was going to just run Tomcat and install CF that way, but well I decided against that route and installed ColdFusion 9 using the regular methods. It’s been running quite smoothly if I do say so myself.

I of course don’t have the installation instructions anymore. Oops. I suppose I could Google for them again and make a copy or something. But well if my server ever crashes and I have to start all over again, yeah I’ll worry aobut it then. FOr now, not so much.

So here’s my current setup:

  • MySQL
  • PHP
  • Perl
  • ColdFusion 9

Yeah something like that. Not too bad if I do say so myself. Of course what else would I say about it? You know I wouldn’t ever say anything bad about my own server setup. Well unless I already have, if that’s the case. Oops. Disregard that blog post.

So yep, I think I’ll have some fun with all of that for sure.

Subversion Your What Now?

Been reading on people adding their home directories to Subversion.

I’m still scratching my head over this one. Currently I zip up the config files that I want to keep backed up and store them on my personal server. I don’t quite get why someone would have the need to subversion their home directory for config purposes. Well I take that back, I suppose if someone wanted to distribute their settings out to a ton of people yeah they could do that. For example a .bashrc file that you want all of your students in a class, or all of your coworkers to have the same functions etc. Yeah I could see where that could be useful. But for day to day things? I don’t see a need for it.

Of course it could change someday, but for now. Nope.

More Linux

Been playing with the Terminal lately. I’ve been wondering why I just didn’t go with a Terminal only install. Oh that’s right, because I want to actually surf the web with all the images and stuff. I’m sure I could have found a way to do that. But yes, I’m still loving having Linux on my home computer. It’s just wonderful to be able to pop open a Terminal and do things.

Ran across some YouTube videos lately that’s teaching me more about bash scripting. I probably should pick up a book on it, that would be way cool.

One script came in very handy. It gives me the ability to record my screen. I figured it would be way difficult and time consuming. But nope, not with the script. I’ll have to post a link to where I got it from later. It just rocks.

So yes, I’m giving Ubuntu Linux version 11.whatever a two thumbs up. I hear there’s a version 12 out there in beta land. I’ve not upgraded yet, still waiting for the OS to tell me it’s available and I’ll let the sucker upgrade itself. So yep good times for sure.

Linux Life

Oh yes, I did it. I removed the Windows Vista OS from my laptop and installed Linux.

Now I am just happy with what I now have. Oh yes you wouldn’t believe it! Free OS, Free software to use as I please. Yep it’s the greatest thing to happen to my computer since I bought the sucker. It feels like my computer is running quite faster as well. So I’m happy.

The flavor I decided to go with was Ubuntu.

Backing Up Files

As I was in the process of backing up files last night due to the fact that I was getting rid of Windows Vista (finally). I found out the following:

I managed to backup all of my videos and music just fine. I did not however backup some java projects that I was working on. Bad Kyle! Bad!

Oh well, I guess I’ll have to code those over again. This time I’ll be sure to check them into my local SVN repo.

Can’t believe I didn’t do that.

Oh well, once you learn you learn right? That’s how it works yes?

Adobe / Macromedia = Flash

Yeah… let’s talk about Flash for a minute shall we?

Dearest Adobe, why does your product choose to update … what it seems like every 5 minutes. Or every time I turn around? Why?

You can’t seriously be adding that many changes to the Flash program installed on my computer… can you? Perhaps I should start following every little release you do to the software so I’ll know exactly what it is you’re adding to my computer now. Honestly… it’s starting to become annoying. Well more than annoying. Sure you want your followers computers to be up to date and everything… and you think that by making them update every so many days will keep them that much safer. Yeah… about that.

There a freakin’ way you can just do it in the background? Without bothering me? That would be nice.

Fix something… make it better… make it more seamless. I don’t want to even see you that often!

7-Zip

I love 7-Zip. I use it like no other on the command line.

Something occurred to me tonight though. When I backup files… say make a copy over to my DropBox, I just copy them to my Dropbox. I haven’t been zipping them up.

Well guess what I started doing? That’s right. I started zipping up some projects and copying those over to my DropBox.

Good times for sure.

New iPad

Apple has released their new iPad. yes you heard me right, they released a new iPad.

Now interesting thing that happens whenever they release new things… eventually the newer operating system that will go on the device won’t work on version 1 of the iPad. Yeah… same thing happened to my iPod Touch and my Apple Laptop.

So… yeah, I think I’ll still wait a while before getting an iPad. Maybe I’ll wait till version 4 or 5.

Or just never get one at all. Yep that’s also an option.
