Double Slide

Logan St. Claire exited the vortex from which she was sucked into. “Damn you Mallory!” She fell to the ground as a sharp pain hit her right shoulder. Logan grabbed her shoulder with her left hand. She was bleeding.

Looking to the timer in her hand her pulse quickened. “Only five seconds on this world?”

As the timer hit zero the vortex opened up and sucked her in again. Again she went through and exited landing in almost the exact same spot. “Why didn’t I burn up?” She wondered. Looking back at the timer she read the coordinates, it was the same world. She didn’t move on to a different world at all. It was the same world.

“I have two days before I slide again. I have two days to figure out how to make this blasted thing not burn me up and not loop around to the same damn world slide after slide.”

The pain in her shoulder increased. She had to take care of it. She took a look around. Off in the distance stood the Golden Gate Bridge. “I’m still in San Angeles, at least I’ll know where I am.” She headed into town.

She hadn’t been walking too long before a motor cycle came up. The man riding the bike had blue eyes and blonde hair. “Need a lift?”

Logan, still clutching her arm, looked over “Sure, just take me to the nearest hospital.”

“Hop on.”

Logan did as invited and they were off.

As they came into town, Logan looked around. Where did all of the cars come from? People weren’t riding skateboards or even walking around. Everyone had a car.

They came upon a hospital. “Here ya go.” The man said. “Be safe now.” He road off.

Logan stumbled into the Emergency Room of San Francisco General Hospital. She was met by a nurse who at one look at Logan got a wheelchair.

“Let’s get you taken care of.” She wheeled Logan to a bed and started an IV. Inspecting the wound she pulled a bottle out. “I won’t lie. This will hurt.”

Logan nodded.

The woman poured a blue substance out from the bottle into the wound.

Logan squirrmed and held onto the bed tight. “Ow!”

“Almost done.” The woman said. “There we go.”

Logan looked down to her shoulder, the wound was gone. The bullet was sitting on top of her shoulder.

“How does that feel?” The nurse asked.

Logan, still in shock, nodded slowly. “How did you do that?” She started to sit up. The bullet rolled down her yellow orange blouse and into her hand. She looked over the bullet in her hand. “Thanks.”

The nurse nodded. “You’re welcome. I’d like to keep you here for a few days just to make sure you’re all healed.”

Logan shook her head. “I don’t have time for that. I have to get going.” She started to get up but was knocked back down on the bed.

“You’re in no condition to go anywhere.” The nurse said as she laid Logan back down on the bed.

“What did you do to me?” Logan asked as she lost consciousness.

A doctor entered the room. “Everything okay here? I heard you had a gunshot victim.”

The nurse nodded. “Evtherything’s good now doctor. I used the new formula. Worked like a charm. She’s resting now.”

“Good, carry on.”

A day later, Logan woke up. Looking down at herself, she was dressed in a hospital gown. The IV had been removed. Sitting up in bed, she put her hands to her head. “Talk about a hangover.” She said.

Logan looked around the room. It wsa a typical hospital room. Nothing special. Standing up, she walked over to a drawer. Opening the drawer she found it to be empty.

The timer, where was the timer?

Opening another drawer she again found nothing. She moved to a closet and opened it. There were her clothes that she had arrived in. She checked the pockets frantically.

Pulling out the timer, she sighed. “Thought I lost you!” She said to the device. “Don’t do that again.” She looked to the time left, less than 20 hours.

She searched the rest of the pockets, her gun was missing. “Damn you!”

Logan put her own clothes on and made her way out of the hospital.

As she exited the hospital, Logan looked around. She obviously wasn’t home. Whatever Quinn had done to her timer made it so she went someplace else, that much was certain. Logan walked away from the hospital, she needed to find tools. Walking down the street she stopped at a street vendor. Pickingu p a newspaper, Logan read the headlines.

Thousands Die In Rockslide

War On Terror Escalating

President Clinton Exonorated

Logan flipped through the several pages. She had never seen a paper quite this large. “This world would have been perfect to grab resources from.” She said. “Maybe it still will be if I ever get back.”

As Logan walked around town she was amazed at how foolishly people were wasting resources. Sprinkling systems being left on during the day, cars being left idling while people were in stores. She came upon an electronic store and walked in.

After looking around a bit, Logan found the tools she needed to make modifications to the timer. Walking up to the counter she placed the items down on the counter.

The clerk looked at her. “Woah, I can’t have no bomb making purchases going through my store now honey.”

Logan rolled her eyes. “I’m not making a bomb you twit.” She replied.

The clerk looked at her. “Uh huh. Well whatever you’re doing with this stuff… whatever. That’ll be fifty three dollars and fourty two cents.”

Logan pulled out a small wallet and handed him the money.

“Right, have a nice day.”

“Thanks.” Logan said. “Hey, any good hotels in the area?”

The man nodded. “Yeah, just up the street. The Dominion.”

Logan smiled. “Thank you for your help.”

“If you need some company, don’t hesitate to ring me.” The clerk said handing Logan a card. “I’m always up late.”

“I bet you are.” She exited the shop putting the business card in a pocket.

The Dominion Hotel was empty. Almost like a ghost town. Logan walked up to the front desk and rang the bell. Leaning against the desk she looked around. A dull room with dull drapes. Dull. Dull. Dull.

“Ah a visitor. How may I help you?” A woman asked.

Logan turned around. “I’d like a room please. 1215 if you have it?”

The woman checked. “I’m sorry, that room is currently occupied. How about one of our suites instead?”

Logan nodded “Whatever fine.”

“Here you are, room 107.” She handed Logan a key. “Checkout time is noon tomorrow morning.”

Logan smiled. “Thank you.” Taking the key, she headed upstairs.

Room 107 was a good sized room. As soon as she enterd Logan set her bag from the elecronic shop down on a table in the entry way. Off to the left was a small kitchen, and off to the right was a bedroom. Complete with a king size bed. “This will do.” She said.

Sitting down at the table she started working on the timer. Pulling wires here, pushing in chips there. Soldering pieces together. It wasn’t the prettiest job but if it did what she needed it to do it wouldn’t be that bad.

Ten hours later her changes were complete. She could sleep for six hours and have plenty of time to slide… to wherever the device wanted to send her. At best she hoped she had figured out the burning things to a crisp part. Putting the device back together she flipped on the switch and looked at the time.

“Oh no.” Logan let out a gasp. The timer again read five seconds.

The timer beeped as the numbers cycled around to zero. “Time’s up.”

The vortex opened and sucked Logan into it. As she traveled through the orange interdimensional wormhole, she held her breath. In a second or two she would either know if she would survive or burn up on re-entry.

The vortex opened.

Logan was thrown back into the hotel room. She landed with a hard thud on the floor. The timer flew out of her hands and landed next to the wall.

“I’m alive?” Logan said in disbelief.

Standing up, she walked over to the timer and picked it up. It read forty-five minutes. Looking to the table, it was just as it had been.

“I didn’t move to a different world.” She said. “I really didn’t slide.”

Logan sat back down at the table and started to work on the device again. She wondered how many more slides she would be through before correcting the problem. Mallory had managed to mess her over good. “Dam kid.” She said.

There was a knock at the door.

Logan looked up from her work. Who could be bothering her now? She stood, walked over to the door and opened it.

“Mallory” Logan said as she saw who was on the other side of the door.

Quinn looked at her. “I’m sorry have we met?”

In his hand was a device. It wasn’t a timer, it was something else. She took a quick look at the screen. There were what appeard to be spacial coordinates on it. Was he tracking her?

He didn’t recognize her though. Possibly a double of the Quinn she had run into? Looking back to him she smiled. “No we haven’t. I’m Logan. What can I do for you?”

Quinn smiled. “Are you by chance using Sliding technology? There are some strange spikes coming from this room.”

Logan looked over her shoulder to the table. “Yes yes I sure am. Come in.”

She moved over to the table and handed him her device. “It keeps opening a portal to this same world and won’t let me go anywhere else. I don’t get it.” She said. “Could you maybe take a look?” She bit her lip flirting with him.

Quinn sat down and worked with Logan’s timer. She took the time to rub his shoulders.

A half hour passed. Quinn closed the back of the timer and handed it back to Logan. “That should do it.” He said. “Now if you’ll excuse me I have a slide to catch.”

“Thanks again.” Logan said as she showed Quinn the way out. “Stupid doubles.”

Her timer beeped, it was time to go. As the vortex opened that familiar orange color showed up. It was time to tell if his changes worked. She jumped into the vortex.

Logan exited the vortex. She was standing in the middle of a forrest. She had made it. But where was she? Was she home? Was she in the same place? She looked at the timer and checked how much time she had left on this world. A week and change. She had time to find out. The good news, she wasn’t dead.

Strange Reunions

The vortex opened and deposited Quinn, Wade, and Rembrandt out in the middle of a park.

“Please tell me we’re home!” Rembrandt yelled. “Just…” His voice trailed off as he caught a bridge in the distance.

“The Azure Bridge!” Wade said excited. “We are home!”

Quinn smiled, he had finally gotten his group home. Looking at the timer he put it in his pocket. “Finally.”

“What … what do we do?” Wade asked. She walked over to a park bench and sat down.

Quinn followed her and sat down next to her. “Wade, we’re home. We look up family.”

“Quinn!” A voice came from accross the park. “Wade! Remmy!”

The sliders looked up to see a man shouting at them. He ran over as fast as his legs would carry him. “Is it reall you?”

Quinn and Arturo looked at each other and sighed. “Conrad.”

As Conrad Bennish walked up to them he could only smile. “You came back again!”

Quinn smiled. “Yes we’re back.”

Rembrandt looked at the man, “Do I know you? What do you mean back… again?”

Conrad nodded. “Dude, don’t you remember the last time you came back? It was like three years ago man!”

Rembrandt looked at Quinn “We did what now?”

Quinn shrugged. “Conrad, we haven’t been home in five years. You’ve gotta be daydreaming man.”

Bennish stroked his beard. “I guess it could have been someone else… with the whole alternate dimensions. Well one thing I’m sure of, Arturo will go nuts when he sees you! Man remember how he didn’t believe anything you told him?”

Quinn nodded. “Yeah, I’m sure he was pretty ticked off over the whole thing.”

Bennish nodded “Shoot, worse than that man. He claimed that he invented sliding!”

Quinn sat back down on the bench as his jaw dropped. “That bastard.”

Bennish dropped his smile “I know dude. It’s something else for sure.”

Quinn stood up “He still working at the university?”

“I think so.”

Wade lookd to Quinn “Quinn, like you said let’s go meet up with family first. We can take care of the professor later.”

Quinn smiled “You’re right.” He kissed her on the cheek and said “I’ll catch up with you two later. I’ll be at my mom’s.”

Quinn headed towards home, Wade and Rembrandt went their ways as well leaving Conrad Bennish alone in the park.

Quinn knocked on the door to his house. The gate had squeeked like it was meant to. He couldn’t quite get why the squeek was necessary. Maybe it was something that was just meant to reassure him. Who knew.

As the door opened, his mother stood before him. “Yes?” She started “Quinn!” Mrs. Mallory hugged her son tight. “Oh Quinn! It’s been so long since I last saw you!”

He returned the hug just as tight. “Mom! It’s good to see you!”

“Oh Quinn, after you left that second time, I didn’t think I’d see you.”

Quinn nodded. “You’re the second person to have said something like that to me today.” He continued to hug her.

“Come in, I’ll explain it all to you.” She said as they went inside and sat down.

Mrs. Mallory explained the situation with the last group that had visted her home who called themselves Sliders.

“Oh brother.” Quinn said. “I go for an adventure, finally make it back and find out all hell has broken loose on my Earth.”

“Whatever the case I’m so happy you’re home.” Mrs. Mallory said.

Wade walked into her apartment. On the desk were letters upon letters, some opened some not. She read through a few of them. They were deals based on book deals and writings from her journal she was keeping about their adventures sliding.

She picked up a phone and called made a call. “Hey Sandra” there was a pause as she waited for the person on the other end to speak, they were shocked to be hearing from her. “Of course it’s me silly! Who else would it be?” She paused, “Wait what? Start that over, you have to tell me everything.” Wade said as she sat down.

Rembrandt Brown knocked on a door in an older part of town. Nothing fancy or really kept up. He wasn’t even sure if there would be a response, but it was a place to start.

“Who’s making all that noise?” A voice came from behind the door.

Rembrandt smiled. “Mama, it’s me! It’s Remmy!”

As the door opened an older woman with gray hair looked out. “Remmy? But you’ve been gone… for so long.”

His smile dropped. “I know mama. I’m home now. I’m home.”

“… and that my dear students is why the Earth goes around the Sun.” Professor Arturo finished his comments. “Class dismissed.”

As the room emptied, Max walked over to his desk and started packing up his briefcase. Arturo was interrupted as a familiar face entered the room. “Ah Mr. Bennish what can I do for you?”

Conrad walked up to his former teacher. “Have you heard man? They’re back.”

Max kept packing his things. “Who are they?”

Conrad smiled “Who do you think? The Sliders.”

Max dropped a paper. It fell to the floor. He looked to Conrad in shock. “What?” Could it be? They had come back for him? “Where are they?”

“Who? The Sliders?”

“Of course you blistering idiot! Who else would I be talking about?!”

Conrad laughed “Dude, you don’t have to get so excited over it. They went their ways man. Probably to catch up with family and stuff.”

Max thought it through. “Good, their timer hasn’t hit zero yet then. They have time.” He headed out the door leaving his briefcase behind.

As Max walked across the university campus, he couldn’t help but start running. He wondered why they didn’t track him down first. That really didn’t matter though, what mattered most was they were back.

Before long, Arturo was at the Mallory’s door. He knocked on it and waited.

The door opened, it was Mrs. Mallory. “Oh Professor … Arturo isn’t it?”

“Yes ma’am.” Arturo said “It’s good to see you again.”

She looked him up and down remembering the last time she had seen him. He and his double had fought on the front lawn before the Sliders had left for another world.

“Yes of course. What can I do for you?”

“Ah, what indeed.” Max said. “I heard that young Quinn was back. I wanted to welcome him home.”

Mrs. Mallory hesitated “Do you think that’s a good idea? I mean with all that happened three years ago…”

Max rubbed his hands together “Yes the um incident. Oh trust me Mrs. Mallory, time has given me the chance to think things through.”

“Please come in. I think Quinn is downstairs in the basement.”

Max entered the residence. “Thank you.” He headed downstairs.

Sure enough, Quinn was seated at a computer running through calculations.

Arturo walked up to Quinn “You came back for me!”

Quinn turned around “Professor.” He said. Quinn turned back around and continued working.

“After all this time, that’s the best you can do?” Max asked. “One would think you’d have more to say.”

Quinn stopped typing. “What do you want me to say Professor? That I’m happy you took credit for my work?”

Arturo sighed. “What? We’ve been through this. Three years ago, that was my double from this world!”

Quinn looked up “You’re making no sense. You’re the only one here.”

“I think there’s been a miscommunication Quinn.” Max went on to explain how he was switched with his double from this world and was left here when they slid. “Don’t you remember?”

Quinn shook his head. “Professor, I haven’t been here for five years. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Max paused as he attempted to put all of the pieces together in his head. “You aren’t the Quinn I know… this is in fact your Earth.” He sighed. “Dammit. Here I had thought you had come back for me. But in reality you have just come home to your own world.”

Quinn caught onto what the man was saying. “I’m sorry Professor, I’m not the Quinn you knew or traveled with. You’ve been stuck here for three years?”

Max nodded “Yes, and a great deal more I fear.”

Quinn looked to his timer on the desk. “I really don’t have need for this anymore. I’m home. You could use this to search for your home world.”

“I don’t even have the coordinates of my Earth Quinn. Bouncing from Earth to Earth just doesn’t sound enjoyable anymore.”

Quinn nodded. “I understand. It was only by chance that we happened to come back here. We were lucky.”

Max sighed “I will take my leave of you now. I have bothered you too much. Good day.”

Quinn showed Max to the door. He couldn’t imagine just settling down on a strange Earth that wasn’t his own. He hoped the Professor would be able to cope.

Max took a look at the Mallory house before heading back to the university. To have come so far and yet so short. He truly was going to spend the rest of his life there on a world that wasn’t his.

“Quinn, Wade, Rembrandt… wherever you are. I hope you had a hell of a ride.” Arturo said to the wind as it rushed through his hair.

Only A Digit Away

Fred looked across the table to his date. “So what you’re telling me is this device is a phone?” He pointed to a large piece of equipment with a keypad and an antenna on it.

Lucy held the device up and nodded. “Yep, it’s called a cell phone. A new invention my company is producing.”

“A cell phone.” Fred said carefully “where’s the cord?”

Lucy shook her head “You’re silly, there is no cord. It runs through airwaves.” She looked at her watch “I’ve got to get going. Thanks for dinner.”

Fred nodded as his blonde friend stood and walked away taking her new toy with her. Hey envied Lucy, she was always showing off the various new inventions her company developed. He knew she wasn’t suppose to share them with him, but she didn’t seem to care.

He knew that he wanted a cell phone., Fred wanted Lucy’s cell phone. He imagined what power he would have. Not to mention how much money he could end up making.

Fred stood from the table and left the restaurant. Outside, Lucy was waiting for him. Fred was startled to see her. “What are you still doing here?”

Lucy didn’t respond. She just stood there with a confused look on her face. As Fred approached his friend, he noticed blood dripping from her hand. “What happened?”

Lucy struggled to speak. “Only a digit away.” She handed Fred the phone as she collapsed to the ground dead.

Fred’s hands were shaking. He heard a woman scream and point in his direction.

“That man! He killed her.”

Fred started to run, he didn’t want the police to arrest him for a crime he didn’t commit

As he turned a corner, Fred almost ran into a man wearing a trench coat. “Slow down young man” the stranger said as he grabbed Fred’s shoulders. “Where are you running to?”

Fred stuttered a reply. “No…no…where.”

The man looked at the phone in Fred’s hands. “I see.” Taking a step back and to the side, he pointed down an alleyway. “I won’t keep you.”

Fred started to walk down the alley as the man said “one more thing. I’m only a digit away.”

Fred froze in his tracks. Lucy had said something along those lines. He turned to ask the man what he meant. The man was no where to be found. Fred clutched onto the phone tighter and ran down the alleyway to his apartment.

Once inside, the cell phone. started to ring. Fred decided against answering it. He didn’t know what tracking capabilities the police had and didn’t want to find out.

Walking into his bedroom, Fred decided to sleep it all off somewhat hoping it was all a bad dream.

Fred found it strange that he was calm when he got ready for bed. As he laid his head down on the pillow, he fell asleep right away and entered the dreaming world.

In his dream, Fred saw clouds. Everywhere there were clouds. Some were white, others blue and some were red. Fred was standing on a red cloud. It wasn’t drifting as quickly as the blue clouds or the white clouds. the cloud he was standing on was hardly moving at all.

As he looked around, Fred saw Lucy standing on a blue cloud. He tried to get her attention but had little luck.

“It’s no use Fred.” A voice said from behind. “She can’t hear you.”

Fred turned to see the familiar form of the man he had seen in the alley. “Why?”

The man pointed towards Lucy. “She’s in another existence. If you want to talk to her, answer the phone.”

The dream ended. Fred woke up to the sound of the cell phone. ringing. He got out of bed and headed over to the device. The power light was flashing a red light on and off. On and off. As Fred picked up the phone, he thought about what the man in the trench coat had said. He pressed the power button and felt blood trickle down his hand as he fell to the floor.

Fred woke up in a place similar to that in his dream. Instead of being on the red cloud, he was standing on the blue cloud next to Lucy. She currently had her back facing him. Fred put his hand on Lucy’s shoulder. Lucy turned around quickly and somewhat startled.

“What are you doing here?” She paused. “You answered the phone.”

Fred nodded “Yes I did.” He was concerned by Lucy’s voice. Something was wrong.

Lucy shook her head. “It happened again.”

Nothing was making sense to Fred. “Lucy do you want to tell me what is going on here?”

Lucy started pacing back and forth. She also started shaking her head and talking to herself.

Fred reached out to stop her. “Lucy what’s wrong?”

Lucy stared into Fred’s eyes, almost allowing herself to become lost in the green that they were. “They warned me and I didn’t listen.”

Fred held his friend’s shoulders “Who?”

Lucy began to cry. “My bosses.” She replied. “They told me it wasn’t ready. That things might happen.” She paused as more tears flowed “But they didn’t expect it to turn out like it did.”

“What are you talking about?” Fred demanded.

Lucy shook her head “Don’t you see Fred? We’re dead. That device killed us!”

“No Lucy, it didn’t kill you.” The man in the trench coat said. “It simply took your soul.”

Fred turned around to face the man in black. “Excuse me?” He let go of Lucy. “I saw her die.”

The man smiled, “As you should have. That was the desired effect.”

Lucy took a step forward and pointed at the man. “They steal souls for use as a labor force.” Putting her hand down she continued. “The people they take, their bodies on earth become mindless zombies.”

The man nodded his confirmation. “It’s the truth. They act like you, even talk like you. In the end they basically are you. Except for the fact of not having a soul of course.”

Fred clenched a fist “And when every soul on earth is under your control? What will you do then?”

The man’s smile became bigger. “Oh we have it under a tight control. It will take millions of years to get everyone. If by chance that does happen, we’ll use the planet for fuel and move on to the next system.”

Lucy sighed a sigh of defeat.

Fred held up a finger. “But why through a device that isn’t widely in use? There’s only one prototype.”

The man nodded. “True, but in time everyone will have a cell phone. Just give it time.”

“How can you be so sure?” Fred asked.

The man laughed out loud.”I’ve got a feeling everything will go according to plan.”

The End

Writer’s Block Sucks

My tale is not that different from those that have happened to others. Why do I proceed to speak when people have already heard such things, one must wonder. Each person is unique in their own special way. My uniqueness is my own, but my journey has been told by others I’m sure.

The day was like any other day. Children were playing in the yard, dogs barking or going on walks with their owners, and people were going to work. Since it was the day time, I was taking my usual needed sleep. This is curious to most, they wonder why I sleep during the day. Let’s just say that I work the graveyard shift. Heh, if it were only that easy.

By my nature I am a creature of the night. No, not a video game addict who plays until the wee hours of the morning. No no. My curse is much more worse than that.

You see, I’m a vampire.

I suppose there’s more to the explanation than that. I am a vampire with writers block. Of course I wasn’t always a vampire. A long time ago I actually had a life. No really I’m serious. Soul and all. Not to mention the fact that I was a writer.

Normally I would be sleeping during the day, but as of late I’ve had a little problem with that. I suppose it all started when I got a bad case of writers block.

Before I was turned, I never had a case of writers block in my life. Hard to believe I know, but it’s the truth. Of course it probably wouldn’t hurt to mention that I had only been writing for less than a year before I was turned, and the fact that I’ve only been a vampire for under five years.

Don’t get me wrong. At first the sucking of blood was really a turn on. But after the first several hundred, it got rather mundane and boring. I miss the taste of food, real food. That was actually prepared and cooked. Not alive and squirming trying to get away from you to the point where you hvae to snap their neck.

There’s no fun when all you ever do is kill and not feed from them. It annoys me when they whine about how they’re too young to die.

I mean give me a break. If only they would accept the fact that they are food, everything would be grand. Guess I can’t get everything I want, but who ever does.

Let’s table all of that for the moment and return to the subject at hand, if there really is such a thing. That of my writers block. At first I thought that feeding would break my block. I fed off the usual vermon that would walk the streets at night with nothing better to do.

After that, I attempted my fate with more intelligent people. I drank the blood of foreign dignitaries, heads of state, even a daughter of the President. But to no avail, none of it helped. Yes they were bright impressionable people, but unfortunately they were not enough.

How long must I allow this writers block to surround me? I only wonder how long it will consume me.

They say that the dead tell no tales. If I were dead, I would have to agree. However, considering the fact that I am undead, it is just a rumor. In my opinion the undead have so many experiences to write about and stories to tell. True I haven’t been a vampire very long, but there are some vampires that have been around for centuries. I have wondered what it would be like to live for a hundred years or even into the next century. Guess I’ll have to wait.

Oh look, the neighbor is mowing his lawn… and talking on a cellphone. What will they think up next? Stupid mortals.

Whatever happened to the good old days when people would actually talk to other people face to face? Those were simpler times. I suppose I shouldn’t knock the cellphone. I’ve been known to sneak up on people while they were distracted by some conversation or another.

I remember one time I was in a library, a fellow author was just talking away on the bloody phone, she never saw me coming. Her blood was truely entertaining. Never in my life had I ever gotten so many ideas. My hands couldn’t keep up with my mind…

Say, that’s it! I just need to feed off other writers. That’s how I’ll get over my block. And what luck, it’s getting dark outside.

It’s my lucky day after all. Soon my writers block will be gone. I’m going to go pay the local poetry corner a visit. I just hope they’ll have some actual talent. Don’t want to waste my time, I only live forever after all.

The End

Strangers From The Sky

Preface

A year had come and gone since Nokev returned back to the city of Shuka from the mountain range of Kerta. Over that period of time the Religious Council basically grilled him for information. No one had ever come back from outside the city limits unharmed, Nokev was the first. He didn’t have answers for their questions and he was glad for that. The excitement and rumors wouldn’t wouldn’t die down for a while, Nokev learned to deal with people staring at him.

Nokev’s wife, Norev, helped her husband reconstruct his technical journals and other notes over the previous year. She kept the majority of Nokev’s writings safe from the council. Norev knew how important her husbands work was to him and wanted to help him as much as she could. She figured that if Nokev could turn a new leaf and learn to put her before his work again, she could help him out.

Norev was still angry with the council for not sending a search and rescue team out for her husband. As far as Norev was concerned, the council would have no part in her life. She didn’t trust them anymore. If she ever would learn to trust the council again, it would take a long long time.

Chapter One

As the sun began to show its face and shine over the city of Shuka, Nokev was already hard at work in his reconstructed workshop. At the request of Norev, he had left their home early to begin his work. Today Nokev was working on a new locator system to help with flight analysis. Ever since his last trip to the stars, Nokev wanted to improve his emergency systems. He was determined to go up again and with that determination wanted everything to go smoothly.

Click. Click. The sounds of keys being pressed at a rapid speed filled the room. Nokev was standing at his computer console as he was configuring the guidance system. “Carry the two…” Nokev said to himself. “And that should do it.” Click. Resting a hand next to the keyboard, Nokev checked the screen hoping everything checked out. He frowned as he noticed there was no change.

“Maybe if I…” he said as he pressed a few more keys.

Knock Knock

“It’s open!” Nokev yelled across the room.

A young man, Nokev didn’t recognize, entered the workshop. In his hand was a folded up yellow piece of paper.

“Are you Nokev?” The man asked.

Nokev nodded “That’s the name, don’t wear it out.” He chuckled as he walked towards the man. “What can I do for you?”

The man held out a piece of paper. “I was told to deliver this message to you.”

Nokev looked at the messenger “I usually don’t accept messages from people I don’t know, but since it is from the Council, I’ll take it.” He took the paper and started to open it.

“How?” The man started.

“Nokev smiled “How did I know?” He glanced to the paper and then back to the man. “When you’re told to do something, it can only be a message from the council.

The messenger shook his head, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Here was someone that was telling him a concept he never thought of. Why didn’t he see it earlier?

Nokev put his arm aound the man and continued to smile. “It’ll take time but you’ll learn kid.” He rememberd how nieve he was before the age of twenty. Since then too many experiences with the council changed his outlook and he never went back to that nieve state. Nokev paused wondering if he should go into further detail about the council. He decided against it. “What’s your name?”

“Orish” the man said.

Nokev took his arm from the man’s shoulder and held up the paper. “Thanks for the message Orish, have a nice day.” He continued to smile “You can show yourself to the door.”

Orish nodded and left the room leaving Nokev to read the message in quiet. “What do we have here?” Nokev said. “Must be important if they sent a messenger to me.” As he read the letter, confusion filled his face. Nokev exited his workshop in a quick pace and headed towards the council chambers.

Nokev’s trip across town was typical. Everywhere he turned people stopped and stared. The townspeople were’nt afraid of him, but they certainly didn’t feel comfortable around him. Nokev didn’t care what others thought, he was an outstanding citizen who fought for his beliefs. If they couldn’t handle or accept that, it was their loss. He was still determined to help usher in a new era for his people. It was just taking longer than he imagined.

As he approached the council chambers, Nokev wandered if anyone would be there. It was around lunchtime and he had been summoned for later that evening. At the steps sat a young girl, it was the daughter of Quoth, one of the council members. Nokev waved to the girl and she waved back like most of the children in Shuka did. They were not afraid of Nokev like their parents were. The children looked to Nokev as a visionary and a leader.

Nokev entered the Religous Council hall and approached the table at the back. Kerta was sitting at the table with a smile on her face.

“Nokev” she said “How are you doing?”

Nokev nodded “Kerta” he replied and held up the paper “Your message sounded urgent, even though I was suppose to come later. You didn’t include any other explanation of why you wanted to see me.” Nokev took a step closer to the table and set the note down. He made sure to keep eye contact with Kerta, determined not to show any weakness. “Why did you summon me?” Nokev asked.

Kerta stood from her chair. “I had a feeling you would come earlier than planned.” She picked up a metalic objerct off the floor and placed it on the table. “We have no further need of this and return it back to your care.” Kerta slid the box towards Nokev. It made a slight screeching sound as it moved across the stone table.

Nokev looked to the box. “My flight recorder.” Picking it up, he allowed a smile to form on his face.

The flight recorder looked almost exactly like it did the day Nokev came back to the city over a year earlier. Pieces of moss and other small debris were still attached to the box reminding Nokev of his two year journey back to Shuka.

“You’re dismissed” Kerta said. She exited the council chambers and did not look back. Inside, Kerta didn’t mind Nokev’s dream of visiting other worlds. She was curious about the unknown but grew to respect the city laws that clouded everyone’s judgment.

As Nokev watched his friend go, he hugged the flight recorder tightly. It would help him continue his determined quest to explore the unknown parts of the Comeki Star System. He left the hall in a happy determined pace.

Chapter Two

Norev was almost finished with her preperations of lunch. She hoped her husband wouldn’t be late. Norev had some news to tell him that was going to knock his socks off. When she heard the door open, Norev ran into the main living area.

Nokev walked in the house still smiling from his excitment. When he saw Norev, his smile increased. “Look!” He said referring to the flight recorder in his hands. “Kerta gave it back.” Nokev paused to see how his wife would respond.

It was no secret that Norev didn’t appreciate Kerta as a member of the ruling party for the planet. She still blamed Kerta for the death of her father, and that blame wasn’t about to go away. “Really” she said “And what did you promise her this time to get it back?”

Nokev’s smile dropped, she had a vaid point. The council never did anything out of the kindness of their hearts. They must be up to something. He thought. “Nothing… at least not yet.”

Norev nodded “Just be careful when they do.” She decided to change the subject. “You’ll never guess what I heard at the market today.” The excitement came into her voice like rushing water. Norev didn’t give her husband the opporunity to guess at her joy. “Outsiders are coming to the city!”

“Strangers from the sky?” Nokev asked. It had been a few years since the Shuka people had visitors from other worlds. He didn’t believe it, she must of heard wrong or had incorrect information. “You must be mistaken.”

Norev shook her head “I heard it from Quoths’ aid, and Quoth told him.” She smiled “It’s true!”

Nokev scratched his head “When do they land?”

“Tomorrow evening.”

“And when were they going to tell me about it?” Nokev asked more to himself than his wife. He shook his head knowing deep inside the council, as a whole, wouldn’t of told him anytime soon. It was comforting to have friends like Quoth on his side. Nokev walked over to a small table in the center of the room and set the recorder down gently.

“You better not scratch that table.” Norev teased “I might have to kick you out again.”

Nokev laughed “Yeah, Kerta would love that I’m sure.” He paused as a wonderful smell trickled in from the kitchen. “What smells so good?”

“Lunch” Norev said.

Nokev smiled “Oh? What did you make today?” He started to walk towards the kitchen.

Norev followed her husband “Your favorite, Curo Root Pie.” She was so happy for everything taking place. People were visiting soon and she had her husband back, what else could she want. Life was pure bliss.

* * *

Lunch passed by rather quickly and Nokev was once again at his shop working on the Shuka Two rocket. He invited Norev to join him, but she declined the offer as usual. She didn’t want to get in the way or be a burdon upon Nokev’s work. Nokev knew his wife’s concerns and knew she had no reasn to feel the way she did, but let it go. As long as he didn’t ignore her like before. She would come before his work no matter what.

Nokev stood next to the rocket and gazed at its hull plating. She was twice the size of the Shuka One rocket and a little more powerful. Nokev had a lot to think about during his two years in the wilderness. During that time several new ideas came to him on how to improve his invention.

The design for the Shuka Two rocket was similar to his previous one. Nokev added a second backup engine as well as reinforced the hull so he wouldn’t have the same problems as before. He still didn’t know why the main cabin on the Shuka One started to decompress and endanger his life, but Nokev hoped the flight recorder would give some insight to the disaster.

A computer next to the rocket made a few beeping noises. Nokev walked over to the main terminal and looked at the screen. In big green letters the words download complete appeared.

“That was quick” Nokev said. As he checked the readers flight log, he understood why it finished so early. “It’s blank…” Nokev ran through a few more search algorithms and recover options but had no success. There was nothing to recover, the flight recorder itself had been purged of all data. Whatever the council did to the recorder, they did a thorough job of it.

Nokev was basically back to where he had begun, except for the knowledge that the council still had certain information he didn’t. Nokev hit his fist on the table. The council had control, they would always have control no matter what he did.

Knock Knock

“Yes!” Nokev yelled with anger in his voice. He wasn’t expecting any visitors and didn’t want any. At least no at that time.

The door opened. A man in his late forties entered. He had dark hair with eyes to match. His skin was sun beaten as though he had been for a long walk, a common practice for many of the Shuka society. As he entered, the man walked right up to Nokev and held out a piece of paper. “I heard your wife told you the news of tomorrows events.”

Nokev took the paper allowing his anger to subside for a moment. “Yes Quoth, she did. Thanks to you I have a rare opportunity on my hands.” Nokev looked to the piece of paper. On it was a scribbled diagram of the city and a nearby hillside just outside the city limits. “What do we have here?” He asked with curiosity.

Quoth pointed to the hillside on the drawing. “This is where the strangers from the sky are suppose to be landing. They will travel to the council chambers that evening.” He paused and pointing to an area near the hillside continued. “Here is where you will meet up with them. Ask for a man by the name of Nova and bring him back here to your workshop.” Quoth drew an imaginary line from the hillside to the city limits. “This is the path the other members of their team will take. You must take an alternative route, the council must not get word that you met with any of their representatives.”

Nokev nodded his head and studied the map carefully determining another path to take. “I understand.”

Quoth smiled “Good. Nova has expertise in your field of study, he should be able to help you get Shuka Two to proper order.” Quoth pulled out a bag full of coins and handed it to Nokev. “Here is some money for extra supplies if you need them.”

Nokev accepted the bag and considered its weight. “It must of taken you months to save this much.” He didn’t dare count how much was in the bag. Nokev didn’t feel right taking his friend’s money. “I can’t accept this.” He held the money out in front to give it back to Quoth.

Quoth put his hands in his pockets. “Sorry, can’t do that. It’s yours. I insist you take it.” He smiled “You’ll need it more than I do.” As far as he was concerned the money hadn’t been his in the first place, it belong to the people.

Nokev continued to hold the bag out to his friend. “What about your family?”

Quoth took a step backward towards the door and shook his head. “The council will provide sufficiently for my needs.” He turned around and walked to the door. “The strangers will be here for two days. You must get Nova back to the ship by sundown on that second day or they will lift off without him.”

“Okay” Nokev agreed. “Anything else?”

Quoth opened the door and turned his head towards Nokev “Yes. Find time to give him a tour of the city, especially the center fountain.” He paused “I promise. You won’t regret it.” He exited the workshop closing the door behind him.

Nokev folded the piece of paper up and put it in his pocket. He planned on getting home early that night, the next few days were sure to be exciting.

Chapter Three

The next morning, Nokev got up bright and early. He was very anxious for that evening to come when he would meet the Strangers from the Sky.

As he was preparing for the day, Norev woke up.

“What time is it?” She asked with a yawn.

Nokev finished tying his shoes and walked over to the bed “It’s almose 4:30″ He said.

“A.M.?” Norev asked.

Nokev chucked, “Yes”.

Norev turned over and buried her face deep in the pillows. “Try not to make too much noise.” She said while falling back asleep. It was her first day off in a long time and she wanted to take full advantage of it.

As Nokev walked downstairs he could only wonder at what would happen that day. Nokev wondered why Quoth suggested that he take the visitor to the center fountain. To Nokev’s knowledge there was nothing of importance or of worth at the center fountain, just a large bowl full of running water. He decided to check it out before the strangers came.

* * *

In the main hall Kerta sat in session with the other members of the Religious Council. They were nearing completion of the usual morning meeting.

“Everything looks in order.” Kerta said “The Strangers from the Sky will be here this evening.” She paused, looked down at a piece of paper and read it to herself.

There was silence in the chambers for about ten minutes.

“Is something wrong?” A member of the council asked. Everyone’s attention was on Kerta waiting for her to respond.

Kerta folded the piece of paper and put it in her pocket. “No, just a note from one of my aids.” She said “Nothing to worry about.” Kerta picked up another piece of paper and read through it. “The people of Dakish want to negotiate trade with our government.”

“What kind of trade?” Another member asked.

Kerta shrugged her shoulders. “I’m not sure.” She looked to a man sitting at the end of the table. “Quoth, you’re the liason between our people and those not of our kind, what do the Dakish people have to offer?”

Quoth searched through a few papers until stopping at the one he needed. “THey are heavily into medical research.” He paused while skimming a few more pages. “Looks like medicine is their largest advancement in the past fifty or so years.”

Kerta nodded “We could use some medical supplies. After the quake of 2149, our town hasn’t had sufficient time to rebuild our supply stock.” She picked up a pen prepared to sign the doument. “All in favor of trading agriculture for medical supplies with the people of Dakish, say Aye.”

The vote was unanimous. Kerta signed the petition and set the paper aside. “That’s all there is on the agenda for today. We are dismissed until after lunch.” Picking up a small stone, she hit it gently on the table three times. The other council members left the room. Kerta took the note out of her pocket and read it again. She stood from her chair and exited the hall.

Kerta walked away from the hall in a quick determined pace. She was headed towards the center fountain. As she approached the fountain, Kerta saw Nokev staring at the water in the deep bowl. “Did you send this message?” She asked holding up the piece of paper.

Nokev nodded. “Yeah, I needed to talk with you.”

Kerta approached the fountain and looked at the water, following Nokev’s gaze. The water was almost clear as day. There was a slight green coloration from the stone that made up the fountain, but it was beautiful. Kerta looked from the water and held up her hands slightly. “What do you want to discuss?”

Nokev smiled “I understand we have visitors coming.”

“How do you know that?” Kerta asked. She hated it when Nokev would find out about things that only the council members were to have knowledge of

This was not the first time he had received word of something happening inside the city.

Nokev continued to smile. “I have my sources” he looked at Kerta’s reflection in the water. “Why are they coming?”

Kerta shook her head “You don’t need to be concerned with that.” She remembered the last time strangers came from the heavens, Nokev was among the first to greet them.

Nokev knew what his friend was thinking. “It was wrong of me to take technology from those people, even if it was a trade.”

Kerta nodded “Yes. Because of your actions, this city was almost destroyed.”

Nokev was shocked “I was cleared on that charge. You even said that I was forgiven.” He stared into Kerta’s eyes, not knowing what to expect. “I guess I was wrong.”

Kerta walked away from the fountain and came back. She was trying to remain as calm as possible. Pointing a finger at Nokev, she allowed the anger out a bit. “Yes, you were wrong.” She said “You tried to use and harness something you didn’t understand. And because of it the quakes lasted for six days!” She paused, “Believe me, if it were up to me you would be locked up.”

“You don’t mean that.” Nokev said “If so, you would have made good on that threat. You are on my side.” He continued, “You just haven’t realized it yet.”

Kerta shook her head “But you used something you didn’t understand!”

Nokev held up a finger. “Yes, but now I have harnessed that energy and I know how to control it.” He stared at Kerta not willing to back down. Nokev had allowed the council to walk all over him one to many times. “I would like to meet with one of their representatives.”

Kerta shook her head “That’s out of the question.” She said “We don’t…” Kerta paused, she should of seen this before. “You are already meeting with someone aren’t you?”

Nokev shook his head “Don’t be absurd.” He said lying through his teeth. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Kerta nodded “Yes you do. You already have arrangements made, don’t you.” She accused “Who gave you the information?” Her voice raised with anger.

Nokev remained silent, he wasn’t about to give out that information. Kerta would have Quoth’s head literally. Nokev couldn’t explain why he brought up the whole subject of wanting to meet with a representative from the alien delegation. Was it because he wanted to be caught red handed? Was he tired of doing things behind the backs of the Religous Council? Nokev didn’t have answers to any of his questions, and if he was going to meet with the Stranger from the Sky, he wasn’t going to continue with this conversation.

Looking back down at the water, Nokev attempted to change the topic. “Has this fountain always been this color?”

Kerta shot Nokev a confused look and that look grew to disappointment. She realized he wasn’t about to give any information to her. For the time being, she would let it go. But one day, soon, she was determined to understand what was going on in his mind. Kerta allowed a sigh of frustration, if it came down to torture she was prepared to venture down that road. Yes a good friend would probably die by her hand, but the safety of the city had to come first.

Beep Beep.

Kerta pulled out a small device. “We’ll continue this discussion later.” She said, “I’m needed elsewhere.”

Nokev nodded “Ah the busy life of a council leader.” He didn’t look up from the water, “We’ll talk later.” Nokev watched his friend go. He still wished she would understand what he was trying to do for his people.

As Nokev turned his attention back to the fountain he noticed that the water changed colors slightly. Instead of a light green, the water was now a mix between blue and green. It was beautiful, more beautiful than he had seen in a long time. The last time Nokev saw anything remotly similar was when he was on his two year journey back to the city.

Nokev smiled, he would have to bring his wife to the fountain and show her. Nokev left the center fountain determined to return later. After all, he was going to be showing a stranger around the city.

Chapter Four

What’s Out There?

Chapter One

The sun was brightly shining over the city of Shuka, there was peace on the planet. Children were playing childhood games with each other, birds were chirping love songs and other beautiful music that was pleasant to the ear. It was a glorious day to be alive at such a time, indeed it was a marvelous time to be alive.

Nokev, an engineer by trade, was sitting at a computer console in his workshop. Over his lifetime he had worked on several different projects trying to improve the society in which he lived.

For over ten millenia the city of Shuka had found peace, Nokev wanted to continue that peace for as long as possible. He was always interested when other civilizaitons from other worlds would come to Shuka and share experiences and literary arts with his people. Because of the strict religious rules, he with other fellow Shukians were not allowed to go outside of the city limits. Nokev had always wondered why they weren’t allowed to expand their horizions as he liked to put it. The answer was always the same. The religious council, which also ran the city, believed that there was nothing but evil outside the city limits. Nokev never fully understood the doctrine, but he obeyed anyway along with his fellow brothers and sisters.

Since the council believed that evil was present outside of the Shuka city limits, Nokev decided that he would bypass the city limits completely and go beyond them. Nokev remembered the day that he first thought about constructing a space vessel. He was sitting at home one evening discussing religion with his wife. At that time in his life, he had many questions concerning what was beyond their universe. Sure they had visitors from other planets in the past, but those were mostly from neighboring planets in the solar system. He wanted to see what was beyond those. Nokev wanted to visit other places for a change. It was nice to receive visitors, but he wanted to be on the otherside being greeted instead of being the greeter. Nokev was lost in thought as he pondered the past, and even moreso as he began to ponder the possibilities of a possible future among the stars.

“Incoming Message.” The words flashed on a computer screen infront of Nokev bringing him back to reality and away from his daydream, for a moment. Nokev activated a few controls allowing the message to appear on the screen, it was a memo from the city’s religious council.

TO: Nokev
FROM: Religious Council of Shuka
RE: Space flight to other worlds.

Nokev, we have reviewed the information you have sent us and carefully considered it. At this time we feel it is a waste to continue in this exercise. We feel that your ideas about contacting other species outside of our solar system is both unsafe and not practical. We understand how much work you have put into this project and are sorry for any inconveience this may have presented you.

Sincerely the council.

At this information Nokev hit his fist against the desk at which he was seated. They don’t understand. He thought to himself. They’re just afraid of the unknown and what wonderful possibilities there are out in space. They just simply don’t understand! He paused, allowing his mind to focus more. I will make them understand. Nokev stood from his workstation and walked over to a platform with a computer console infront of it. The platform had an object covered by a large white sheet. Nokev walked up to the console and activated a few controls. A diagram of a space vehicle appeared. As Nokev looked at the console, he could only feel a greater desire to launch the ship and continue on with his dream. After a few moments passed, he pulled back the sheet allowing the space vehicle to get some sunlight for the first time in months. Nokev moved closer to the ship and put his hand on the front of it.

“Don’t worry my friend, I will not allow them to stop us, we will make it.” He said almost believing that the ship could hear him and was an actual form of life. Nokev walked back over to the workstation and picked up a few papers. He then walked out the door and made his way towards the council hall in the middle of the city.

Chapter Two

The council hall wasn’t too crowded that day. The six members sat behind a huge oak desk at the back of the room allowing them to easily speak with one another and anyone else they were speaking with. At the current moment, they were speaking with a gentleman who had burn marks up and down the right side of his body. As Nokev entered the hall, he could hear the final words of the council to this man.

“We find you guilty of treason.” One of the council members that was sitting on the end said. “If you had followed our wishes and not left the city, and went into the outside world, you would not have gotten yourself into such trouble. Hopefully this will teach you a lesson.” The man paused. “How do you feel about your actions?”

The man looked down to his feet, not knowing exactly what to say back. “I know that what I have done was wrong. And I ask forgiveness for this act of treason.”

A woman seated at the table picked up a piece of paper. “Tomov, consider this hearing a warning. You will not be punished at this time. However, if you continue in this evil practice, you will be tried again and next time you will not be as lucky.” She paused allowing the information to sink into his mind. “Is that clear?”

The man known as Tomov, nodded his head. “Yes. I understand.” He replied with gratitude in his voice. “I will never do it again, I promise.”

“Very well.” The female council member replied. “You may leave.”

Tomov turned and walked out the door. Nokev watched him leave with a certain fear on his face. The council had truely been easy on him. Ever since the council began over 10 millenia ago, they had a certain force of power with them. It was difficult to explain and even more difficult to understand. Most people knew to obey the laws, but on a few occasions the council had to enforce the law. It wasn’t too often that they put forth such force, but it was known to happen on more than one occasion.

“What do you want?” The female council member asked Nokev. “Didn’t you get our message?”

Nokev stepped closer to the council desk allowing him to better look the members of the council in the eyes. He stood firm, bold as a ship on the sea ready for battle. He collected his thoughts before he spoke, making sure he would phrase his argument correctly and hopefully attain what he wanted. “Yes, I did get your message.” He paused, allowing himself to take a deep breath. “I thought that you might have not fully taken into consideration my entire proposal.” He held out a few papers. “I’ve brought my documents for your review.”

“We’ve already seen those.” The female council member said. “Our decision stands.”

“Kerta” Nokev continued, “Please review them again. I know that what I’ve come up with will help benefit this entire society.”

Kerta looked to the other council members who shook their heads in disagreement. They fully understood their stand on Nokev’s proposal and didn’t want to continue with any of it. They felt that they had taken the necessary time to understand what Nokev wanted to do, and had decided against it all. To them it was an attack on their way of life, both scientific and religious.

“We have made our decision. You will not be allowed to continue with the Shuka One Project. You must step down and move on to other projects.” Kerta said in a cold voice. “If you do not, we will be forced to take your shop from you and everything you enjoy at this present time concerning your project.”

Nokev placed the papers on the desk. “Listen Kerta. We’ve known each other for over 30 years. We grew up together, you were my first best friend I ever had. I’m asking you now, as a friend to review the information. You may have these copies if you’ve lost yours. Just please review it.”

Kerta looked down to the papers and thought about what Nokev had just said. It was true, they grew up next door neighbors and were really strong friends. She pondered about what would be the right course of action, her fellow council members clearly didn’t like Nokev, they felt his ideas were too ‘radical’ for the time. “Nokev, we have made our decision, it stands. Please do not bring this subject up to us again. You are dismissed.”

Nokev stared his friend in the eyes. “I understand.” He picked up the papers from off the desk and exited the council hall and proceeded home.

The walk home felt rather long. True it was a short distance, but still it felt long. Nokev felt the weight of the council’s ruling upon his shoulders. He wasn’t pleased with their decision, but there wasn’t anything he could really do about it. All he could do was hope that something would change their minds in the future. Nokev planed to go back to the council in a few months to re-submit his proposal to them. Hopefully they would change their mind by then and allow him to continue on with his dream of spaceflight.

Chapter Three

FIVE MONTHS LATER

Nokev once again found himself at the council hall. Once again, he stood in front of the council awaiting an answer. His appeal was the same, it hadn’t changed much over the past few months. A few things were tweeked here and there, a few things added, and some removed; but all in all the proposal was exactly the same. The principle was would they allow him to go into space or not. To leave the city limits, the planet and test out a theory or two. He hoped that they would allow him to do so, but he could never tell exactly what was going on through the minds of the council. They were always able to surprise him in one form or another.

Kerta looked at Nokev with a blank facial expression. “So what you’re telling me is that you just want to launch your rocket and orbit our planet?”

Nokev nodded his head. “Yes. That’s all I ask of you.” He had decided to take things step by step instead of taking five at a time. He wanted to just get a ship into space and run a few tests to see how it felt in space among other things.

“So, you don’t want to visit other solar systems anymore?” Another council member asked.

Nokev shook his head. “No sir, not at this time. I simply want to leave this planet for a small moment, orbit it a few times and then come back. I don’t have the resources to travel faster than light. I’m still working on that stage of the rocket, but that won’t even be near completion for another five or so years.”

Kerta looked down at the desk, papers were scattered all over it. The majority of the papers were Nokev’s research reports. He had brought them again for the council to review. This time they had actually taken the time to review the research again, considering Nokev made a few corrections. “Fine. Nokev, we give you permission to take a test flight and orbit our planet, but nothing more. If we find that you have left our solar system, your project will be band and shut down completely.”

Nokev nodded his head. “Thank you so much. I appreciate your time.” He picked up the papers from the desk and continued out the door. The last time he left the hall, it was a slow walk home. This time around, it didn’t seem slow at all. He was greatful to have a chance to prove to the council that what he was doing was right. That it was time for Shuka to venture out into space and move forward in knowledge. He couldn’t wait to continue his work and launch the rocket.

July 6, 2150

Back at his workshop, Nokev walked over to the platform with the rocket that was covered by the sheet. As he uncovered the rocket a smile formed on his face. He couldn’t help but feel good as he began to realize what possibilities spaceflight could offer his people; being very anxious to leave the planet, Nokev was ready to test out his invention.

Nokev flipped a few switches here and there inside the rocket, preparing it for launch. As he did so, the engine started up and made a gentle humming sound inside his workshop. The vibrations that came with the sound were both soothing and relaxing. Nokev continued to feel that what he was doing was the right choice and best for the planet. As he continued to tweek and calibrate his space craft, he began to think of his wife, or rather his ex-wife. Norev had left him over two months earlier. She grew tired of Nokev always working late into the evening and didn’t like the fact that he was never around; that he never had time for her. Nokev couldn’t blame her. He had been pretty busy over the past months trying to figure out a way to make the council listen to him. He wanted them to approve his wishes of entering into space and taking Shuka into a new frontier and totally forgot his wife in the process. Nokev didn’t ever mean to hurt his wife, but the damage had been done and there was nothing he could do about it. She moved on to another phase of her life and he could only follow her lead and move on with his life as well. Nokev still had bad dreams at night because of the divorce. When the religious council found out about it, they were furious. Kerta couldn’t believe how a man such as Nokev could put his wife second place to his work, she almost had Nokev exiled to outside the city but decided against it at the last moment because of the evil there. She didn’t want to have to put her friend through any of that. Nokev was grateful that Kerta decided not to banish him, that he was allowed to continue in the city and continue on his project. But the emotional scars were still in his heart and that was punishment enough.

As Nokev completed preparatinos for his first test flight, he felt a cold draft enter the room. Turning to see where the draft came from, Nokev realized that the door had opened. As he looked to who opened the door, Nokev dropped an instrument he was holding. A female was standing in the doorway.

“What are you doing here?” Nokev asked in astonishment.

“Is that any way to greet your ex?” Norev replied. Her words were crisp and cold, but there was a certain playful manner to them. She walked over to Nokev and placed his hand in her hand. “I wanted to drop by and wish you luck.”

Nokev released her hand and shook his head. “No, I don’t deserve it, especially after what I did to you.”

Norev smiled. “It’s all right. I forgive you for what you’ve done.” She paused trying to figure out how to express her feelings for the man she had been married to for the past three years. “I wanted to tell you, that even though you overlooked me at times for your work; you were a good support to me. I hope that your test flight goes well.”

Nokev stopped shaking his head and looked into Norev’s eyes. She was still beautiful, as beautiful as the day he met her. He was still in love with her, but knew that it wouldn’t get anywhere anytime soon. “I wanted to appologize also for placing my work before you. It was wrong and I should have known better.”

Norev nodded her head. “Yes, I know.” She raised her left hand, on it was the wedding ring that Nokev had given her three years ago. She held her hand out so Nokev could clearly view the ring. “If you ever want to come home, you know where I live.”

Nokev couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “What are you talking about?” He looked down to her hand, sure enough it was the same ring; but why was she doing this?

Norev smiled. “After this flight is overwith, we can try and pick up where we left off.” And then with a sense of fear her smile went away. “Can’t we?”

Nokev rubbed his forhead. “Why are you doing this? I thought you weren’t interested anymore; that I had damaged things enough.”

“I’ve changed my mind. I am entitled to that, aren’t I?”

Nokev nodded his head. “Yes, you always have a choice to do whatever you want. I’m just confused at it all.”

“Don’t be confused, just say yes.” She replied. “We’ll figure the rest out later.”

An alarm sounded and words flashed upon the screen. They read:

LAUNCH WINDOW CLOSING

Nokev looked to the controls and then back to Norev. “I have to go, my launch window is closing. If I don’t launch in a few minutes, I won’t have another window for two more years!”

Norev nodded her head. “Do what you must. Just promise me that you’ll find me again.” She waited for an answer.

Nokev proceeded to put on his helmet and strap himself in the vessel. As he was doing so, his mind was racing about what to do. If he did re-marry her, the council would be pleased and would hopefully get off his case. He punched a few controls, everything was ready to go except for his answer. He hesitated a few more seconds and then finally turned his attention back to his wife.

“All right. I’ll be back and we can discuss it more fully.” He paused. “Until then, wait for me.”

Norev smiled again. “It’s a deal.” She walked towards the door and exited her husband’s shop.

As she exited, the vessel known as Shuka One lifted off the ground and headed for outer space, headed towards the unknown. Nokev’s mind wasn’t completely on the project anymore, he was partially thinking about his ex-wife and what would happen when he returned.

This isn’t too bad. Nokev thought to himself as the roket continued into the blue sky over the planet known as Shuka. He couldn’t believe what was happening, that he was actually making his dream come true. It was no longer a wish or a goal. It became a reality, one that was quickly moving along at over 700 Comeks an Hour and quickly increasing. As Nokev continued to read his instruments he watched with amazement as the blue sky turned to a dark black background with twinkling dots known as stars. He was reaching the outer limits of his atmosphere and moving upwards towards space; towards the realm of the unknown for his people. Nokev made sure everyhing on the rocket was functioning properly. All of the onboard instruments were at peak performance and he had video equipment recording it all. If I turn this information over to the council, they’ll approve my original plea for sure. Nokev thought to himself as he started to hum a childhood song. After a few more minutes, he was completely outside of Shuka’s ozone layer. Nokev hit a few controls and shut down the engines so he wouldn’t violate the agreement with the council he had made.

Nokev accessed a few controls to activate a recording device. “Shuka One Log July 6, 2150.” He began. “I have successfully left the planet of Shuka in the rocket I designed. So far, I’m running diagnostics to make sure everything on the rocket is working properly and ready for the next stage of my testing. I plan to orbit the planet a few times and then return to my launch bay where I will then present my findings to the religious council and await their direction. End Log.”

Nokev set the recording device down as he continued to check out the systems, several readouts appeared on the screen stating that no damage had come to the rocket on the trip up. He smiled at the results; Nokev had proved that space flight wasn’t dangerous for Shukians as the council had once thought. He checked the video feed and made sure that everything was still recording properly. They’re going to love this footage. He thought to himself. I am the only Shukian to leave our planet in our history, what an amazing honor this is; and I’m a part of it! He stared out into space for a moment realizing how beautiful everything was. As he scanned the solar system with his naked eye, he noted a planet relatively close to his home. If he remembered correctly people from that planet were the first people to visit the Shuka people. They had left records behind for the Shukaians to study. Most of that information had helped Nokev in designing his rocket.

After a moment passed, Nokev realized that it was time for him to continue on with his experiment. He activated a few more controls and the main engine fired again allowing Nokev to turn the vessel and begin his orbit of Shuka. After successfully completing one orbit, Nokev altered a few more controls to try and get closer to the planet’s atmosphere. After doing so, he made another full orbit of the planet.

“Continue Log. I have sucessfully orbited my home planet two times, everything checks out to be okay. I plan on…” Nokev stopped recording the log entry when an alarm went off in the cockpit. He looked towards a computer console infront of him to see what was happening. The screen flashed brightly:

MAIN CABIN DECOMPRESSION IN TWENTY MINUTES…

Nokev checked and re-checked his controls not believing what he was seeing. This can’t be… He thought to himself. Nokev looked down to the Shuka planet wondering if he would make it back in time before he would die. He had to try. Immediately almost without thinking, he set the rocket on a direct course for Shuka City and fired the engines. The rocket responded and started to head towards the planet, Nokev watched with anticipation hoping that everything would go all right. A few moments passed and he was back in Shuka’s atmosphere heading downward. As he continued his descent, the ship shifted direction five degrees port and headed for a place outside the city limits, out in the mountains; a place forbidden by the Shuka Religous Council.

Nokev attempted to open a communications link to anyone on the plnaet. “To anyone within the sound of my voice, this is Nokev. I’m in distress needing assistance, my ship’s going to crash in a few minutes in the Korta Mountain Range…” before he could finish his distress call the ground seemed to come closer and closer until the rocket crash landed in a heavily wooded area.

Inside the Religous Council Hall Kerta was listening to Nokev’s distress call with the other council members. “What should we do?” One man asked her.

“We do nothing.” Kerta replied with sadness in her voice. ” That section is forbidden, and has been forbidden for a long time.”

Quoth, another council member, stood from his chair. “Surely you can overlook the rules for this one instance.” He paused fully knowing what he was asking. “If you won’t look for him, I will.”

Kerta looked towards Quoth. “No. If you do you will be an outcast. It is too dangerous out there in the mountains.”

“How do you know that?” Quoth asked. “All of that hogwash about the evil that is out there is superstition! It isn’t real.”

Kerta looked back to Quoth with a stare that could melt ice. “It has been out rule for over five thousand years, you will not disobey the order. If you go after him, you will be dismissed from all your duties.”

Quoth stood there speechless, he was thinking over in his mind what he would do about the situation. Something had to be done, Nokev was one of their own. Sure he didn’t follow everything by the book on most occasions, but he was still a citizen of the Shuka planet and people. Something had to be done, and he had to do it. “All right ” he said. “I won’t go, but allow me to inform his ex-wife.”

Kerta was shocked. “You know they aren’t on good terms. But if it will make you feel better, do so.”

Quoth exited the hall in a quick pace and headed towards Norev’s housing complex. On the way there, he went over in his mind how he would tell her. Soon enough he was standing at Norev’s doorstep. He knocked on the door and waited.

After a few moments the door opened. Norev stood there with a glass of water in her hand. “Yes Quoth, what can I do for you?” She asked.

Quoth looked into Norev’s eyes. “There’s been an accident…”

In the mountain range known as Korta, Nokev awoke five feet south of the Shuka One Rocket. He managed to eject from the craft shortly before crash landing in the woods. Nokev stood up and brushed some dirt off of his clothing, as he did so he looked around his new surroundings. The Council called this place evil, but to Nokev it looked as beautiful as anything he’d ever seen. Haunting stories of the mountain range came to his mind as he became more fully awake. There had been several “stories” of people being injured in Korta, he even saw one with burns on his body. Nokev still believed they were just that… stories. But, there was always the possibility that he could become a believer if something happened to him while he was traveling back home to the city.

Nokev walked over to Shuka One and recovered his recording devices. The good news was they were intact, on the bad side of things, they were a little damaged from the crash. That didn’t bother Nokev at the moment, the important thing was he was alive. Nokev found the communication device that he used to send a distress signal and attempted to use it.

“Nokev to anyone within the sound of my voice.” He said with hope that others would hear and know that he was still alive. “I repeat, this is Nokev to anyone out there, please respond.” Nothing came back, not even static. Nokev dropped the device and tried to calculate his position. He had to get back to the city to report his findings to the Council and to let Norev know that he was okay. No, he thought, switch that. He would first tell Norev that he was all right, and then report to the Council. It was time to stop putting his work in front of the woman that he loved.

Nokev wasn’t able to salvage the rest of Shuka One it was too torn up to do anything with. He continued his long journy towards town, and with that journey Nokev had a long time to think about his current situation and what he would say to the Council.

Chapter Four

TWO YEARS LATER

Another sleepless night in Norev’s home. She was sitting in her living room staring at a picture of Nokev, her loved one. Norev still couldn’t believe that her husband was missing, or worse that he could be dead. Various townspeople wanted her to forget him, they wanted her to move on with her life, but that wasn’t possible; not until she would find out exactly what happened to Nokev. “Where are you my dear?” She said in a low tone to herself, “Come back to me, I need you here.” She touched the picture with her fingers gently and set it back on an end table. As she sat there, Norev heard a noise at the door. It was a knock, a gentle knock. Visitors… at this hour? She thought to herself. Norev stood from a couch and tightened a purple robe around her body trying to look as modest as possible. As she walked to the door she combed her fingers through her hair tyring to fix it, but didn’t have much success. Finally she reached the door and opened it. She saw the figure of a man standing on her doorstep, it was dark outside so she couldn’t make out who it was.

“Hello Norev.” The man said.

“That voice, I know that voice.” She said outloud. “Nokev?” She reached out her hand and pulled the man inside, Norev gave her husband a hug and a long welcome back kiss. She was so happy to see him again. “It’s been so long.”

Nokev almost lost his balance as he was pulled inside the house. “Yes, it’s me.”

As Nokev entered his ex-wife’s home she closed the door behind him. Norev stood there for a minute. It’s really him. She thought to herself. Norev took her husbands hand and placed it in her own the same way as the day on which he left. “I waited like I said I would.”

Nokev smiled. He was so happy to be among his own people again, especially Norev. The past two years had been very difficult for him. To his knowledge he was the first of his people to survive for a long period of time outside the city limits and live to tell about it. Of course I haven’t spoken to the Religious Council yet. He thought. I wonder what they’ll say.

Norev contineud to stare at the man she loved. Her nightmare had finally come to an end. Now she could rest. Two years had been a long time and now that they were over, and Nokev was back, she would try to treasure every day. She gave Nokev another long hug, it was indeed a marvelous time to be alive. Welcome home my husband. She thought. Welcome home.

The Relgious Council chambers were bustling with activity. Rumors of Nokev returning were going all around the city and several people wanted to see him. They wanted to talk to the man that flew through space. The towns people wanted to listen to the stories Nokev had to tell. They were deeply interested in what occurred over the past two years.

Kerta was seated in her chair with her arms folded. The other members of the council sat with confused expressions. They were usually the first to know when someone returned from the outside barriers of the city. This time it was different, the people knew the information first, and that bothered the council greatly. Kerta shook her head. The people must be mistaken. She thought. No one could survive out there for two years. She held up a hand causing the crowd to go quiet allowing her to speak. “This can’t be possible.” She said with confidence. “Your information is incorrect. Return to your homes.” The crowd obeyed her instructions and dispersed leaving the council members alone.

“Now that that’s overwith.” Kerta said “What’s on the schedule for today?”

Out from the shadows Nokev appeared. “I think I am.” As he stepped forward Nokev watched the councils’ facial expressions. They were shocked. The people of the city were correct, he had returned after a long two years. Nokev watched as the council members quickly wiped the shocked expressions from their faces. “Nothing to say huh?” Nokev asked more to himself than the council members.

Kerta stood from her chair. “Nokev? You have returned from the outside.” She was scared half to death but didn’t show it. She was trained to hide fear. Kerta had seen only a handful of people return from outside the city, they usually had burns covering 25 to 75 percent of their body. There were no marks on Nokev, he appeared to be in almost excellent physical health. Sure ther was a scratch here and a bruise there, but those were common to climbing and hiking long distances.

Kerta walked up to Nokev and visually examined him. She was completely puzzled by his appearance and condidtion. How is this possible? She thought to herself.

Nokev smiled and held up the recording devices he recovered from the crash. “I assume you’ll want to take a look at these.” He walked up to the desk and set them down gently. Nokev looked into Kerta’s eyes. He could sense the fear and great confusion in her soul. “I’ll be in touch.” He exited the council chambers in a slow pace, knowing that questions would follow.

Outside the council chamber, Nokev pulled a hood over his head providing a partial cover for his face. He didn’t want to talk to anyone, at least not for a while. He saw how the townspeople reacted in the hall, if anyone else knew he was alive he would never get any privacy. He continued on his way without any interruption. A few moments later Nokev was standing infront of an abandoned warhouse. He recognized it as his former workshop when he created the Shuka One Rocket.

As Nokev walked inside and took a look around he noticed that it was empty. All of his equipment was gone. There was nothing left from his work. Everything that he had worked for years on, his achievements was no more. Nokev gathered that the Religious Council dismanteled the equipment and probably had it destroyed. The council never had been fully cooperative of his theories and dreams; and now he wouldn’t be able to continue. He left the workshop and walked back towards Norev’s home. “How could they do this to me?” Nokev said outloud. “After two years they still don’t understand!” He kicked a rock as hard as he could and watched as it tumbled down the road. In many ways, he felt just like the rock. He had been kicked aside. As of now, the future, his future looked dark.

Chapter Five

KNOCK KNOCK

“Where have you been?” Norev asked.

Nokev stepped inside the house. “I took a long walk.” He explained quietly. Nokev removed the hood from his head and waited for a moment allowing his eyes to adjust. “I’ts all gone Norev. My work is gone.”

His wife nodded her head. “Yes I know.” She walked over to the couch and sat down. Nokev followed her lead and sat next to her. “Six months after you crashed, they dismantled everything. I tried to talk to them, make them stop, but the council didn’t listen.”

Why would the council listen. They usually never did. On most occasions the council only listened if it suited their interests and helped them out in some way. From the looks of things they hadn’t changed much over the past two years. And why should they change? To the members of the council, their way of government had endured the ages. In their eyes there was no need for change. They didn’t have a desire to make a transition form what worked to the unknown. To them, they were the supreme governing force and the people would be protected under their laws and binding rules. They were called the Religious Council but in actuality there was no religion in them. Those practices were abandoned long ago when times were simplier, so much simplier. But now those times were gone.

Norev smiled gently. She had wanted to ask him something for a long time but was afraid to. As she sat there, Norev pondered how to open a conversation on how life outside the city boundaries were. Like many of her kind she never ventured beyond the borders because of fear. She too had heard the horrible nightmarish talkes of the outside, but never gained the courage to go and explore.

Nokev looked to his wife, he could tell what she was thinking. Not because he was telepathic, but because he knew how she was. “The outside is peaceful, so peaceful.” He said. “It’a a peace I haven’t seen in a long time.”

Norev looked to her husband. “How peaceful?”

“Just this side of paradise.” He stood up from the couch and walked out the front door leaving Norev time to ponder his statement.

The End

Fire Planet

Chapter One: What to run that by me again?

Seth looked to the imposters who called themselves Eric and Rebecca Tompson. In his mind, he knew the truth, the facts of how they died and didn’t want to believe the dead were standing in front of him now like a zombie movie gone bad. Seth had read the official reports and was angry at what he saw.

“You are not their grandparents.” Seth exclaimed in his best authoritative tone. His heart began to beat faster. He could feel his veins popping up on the sides of his face and arms. Seth was in the middle of a mental crisis that wouldn’t go away until he had the answers he wanted to hear.

Eric nodded. “What you read in your reports was true, Eric and Rebecca are dead. We’re duplicates.” He looked to John and Julie; they were about to learn the truth of what happened over 60 years ago. Julie was still unconscious and was lying on the ground after having fainted at seeing her grandparents alive on an alien world.

“You want to run that by me again?” Seth asked with his eyebrows raised.

“All in due time.” Eric looked to where Julie was laying. “But first, let’s find her a more comfortable place to sleep. Follow me please.” John picked his sister up in his arms and the group headed down a long narrow hallway into the thick black darkness that constituted their living environment.

The entire complex was underground and was made out of several connecting tunnels leading almost everywhere except up towards the surface. The environment outside the caves was both inhospitable and deadly to those not accustomed to the temperature or climate.

The small group kept walking until they reached a door. Eric pointed to the opening. “She can sleep here until she recovers. I apologize for the accommodations, but it’s the best we’ve got.”

John entered carefully inside the room making sure he didn’t hit Julie’s head on the door frame. As he stepped inside, he took a look around. It wasn’t much; a small simple cot was lying against the back wall farthest from the door. John maneuvered the cot with his foot until it was resting flat on the ground; he placed Julie on the cot and quietly exited the room not disturbing her, and closed the door behind him. “She should be awake within an hour or so.” John explained “She’s done this before, it’s nothing to be worried about.”

Seth looked to Eric, now that they had gotten the unimportant duties out of the way it was time for answers. As he looked to Eric, Seth could only feel hatred going through his mind. He was determined to find out what was going on and didn’t want to take no for an answer.

Eric met Seth’s gaze and smiled gently. “Yes Seth, we can talk now.” He turned away from the door and headed back the other way down the long dark hallway. Eric shook his head a few times, the government always wanted everything to go their way. They could never slow down or be trusted in any situation. He thought that after 60 some odd years, things would have changed on Earth. But he was wrong. Oh well, he thought, can’t win them all.

After passing three doors, they reached another room to the left. Eric stepped inside and flipped on a light switch. The room slowly grew brighter and brighter until it was at a sufficient level of illumination. A long table with a glass top and marble legs was in the middle of the room. Beautiful cherry wood surrounded the glass securing the tabletop to the legs that went down into the floor. Several high back chairs surrounded the table creating a comfortable environment and atmosphere.

John looked around the room for a moment. He didn’t exactly enjoy the thought of being so deep underground. He had never been on a planet that had its own stable atmosphere. John had been so use to the moon or a station that used simulated gravity and oxygen devices. This was all a new experience for him. It was something he would have to get use to. Although John hoped that he wouldn’t be there too long. Sure it was exciting, but he was feeling uneasiness from it all. That overwhelmed him greatly, and he prayed that no one else could tell.

Eric gestured to the different chairs around the table. “Please have a seat.” John and Seth followed the invitation. Eric sat at the head of the table near a large holographic image display of Earth implanted in the wall.

“May I get you anything to drink?” Rebecca asked. It had been a while since they had seen any other humans or had any type of company of any kind.

John and Seth both shook their heads. “No thank you.” They were more interested in what was going on and didn’t have any desire to drink anything at the present moment.

Rebecca looked at Seth for a bit when it clicked in her head. “Tom had a son named Seth… but you can’t be him, can you? You’d be a lot older than…” She paused as it all came together. “You are Tom’s son. Yes I can see the resemblance now. Thought you were his grandson. All that genetic engineering you’ve gone through. Such a waste.” She paused. “Tell me, what have you given up?”

“Speaking of genetic engineering” Seth said, ignoring the question.. “You’re clones.” His voice was accusatory and his tone was that of disgust.

Eric shook his head and gave a slight laugh. “We’re much more sophisticated than the average clone.” He replied. “Don’t ask me to go into the technical attributes of it, I don’t understand it myself sometimes.” Eric paused trying to figure out a way to explain their situation. “You see, when the original Eric and Rebecca traveled here they made a few scans of this planet. Unknown to them the Argians, the inhabitants that use to live here, made their own scans of their vessel. They made duplicates of your grandparents and the shuttle they were aboard right down to the last molecule.”

“What happened to the… Argians?” Seth asked.

“They died from a severe plague.” Rebecca said as she sat down next to her husband. “Years ago, scientists on this world discovered that a terrible disaster would eventually eradicate this planets entire population. A super nova from a neighboring star system.”

“Time ran out?” John asked.

Eric nodded. “We were created so someone would remember their society and culture.” He added. “They simply did not want to be forgotten.” Eric paused for a moment. “We’ve never actually met a member of their race, we only know about them from records left behind.”

Rebecca nodded in agreement. “We’ve studied the Argians’ databases after realizing who we were and that we couldn’t leave this place.”

“Why can’t you leave?” Seth mused.

“It’s something in our genetic code sequence. We are dependent on this environment.” Rebecca gave a sigh as if it were difficult for her to admit. In the real Rebecca’s life, her life span was determined by a damn device in her arm, and now as a clone she was dependent on a planet she was forced to call home. Life wasn’t fair… at least that’s how the phrase went.

“Why haven’t you aged?” John asked.

“When we were cloned… the Argians re-sequenced several DNA strands that control the aging process.” Eric replied. “When we awoke from the growth tubes we were this age and have remained this age our entire existence.”

“Have you ever tried to leave?” Seth inquired… crossing his arms over his chest he leaned back in his chair.

Rebecca nodded her head. “On one occasion, we almost died from the attempt. That’s when we realized we couldn’t survive without this planet.”

Seth cocked his head back. “Okay, let’s say you are these people.” He said in a low tone. “Why didn’t you just kill yourselves? You had no place to go, you were exiled here from all outside contact.”

“Because we’re not part of the Tribunal!” Eric replied in a cold tone as he implied the barbaric ways of the government. He didn’t have to live on Earth to know that the government was corrupted. He knew it from the beginning when he was only an ensign in the Great War. The government couldn’t be trusted, and those sent to represent the government were the enemy. He didn’t know why he had even decided to sit down at the same table as Seth, and didn’t know why his grandchildren had decided to bring him along. Seth was trouble, in Eric’s eyes. He couldn’t be trusted for a moment. “Let me ask you something.”

Seth nodded his head, he had expected this. “Go right ahead.” Seth’s voice was calm, years of training had prepared him for interrogation situations. This was no different to him. Seth tried to build his mental stability back to where it had been in the past when he was back with the Tribunal. He didn’t want to give away any secrets about the Tribunal, even though he had gone against them, a part was still loyal to the organization, which had been founded over one hundred years ago.

“Why are you here? Why did you come with them?”

Seth tightened his crossed arms. Is that all? He wondered. “I had heard news they were configuring Rebecca’s shuttle for some kind of flight and I wanted to see what it was all about. There had been talk of coming back to this place. I wanted to see it for myself.”

Eric folded his own arms. “That’s not very Tribunal of you. What’s the catch?”

“No catch. I was just curious.”

John sighed, he was afraid of this confrontation as soon as he saw Eric and Rebecca. Seth had known Eric years ago before the war. They had been in the service together, and just happened to go different ways.

“Just curious… right.” Eric said, knowing there had to be something deeper.

Seth nodded. “Well, after you destroyed Earth. I had to see what kind of power this planet held.”

Eric’s face dropped. “Excuse me, we did what?”

Down the hallway they heard a woman scream.

Chapter Two: You’re Safe

The screaming echoed through the halls. It was Julie, she had apparently woken up from her fainting spell.

As John ran down the hallway he could only think one thought. Get there before Seth does.

Eric and Rebecca remained behind in the room. Looking to one another they knew what had to be done.

John and Seth made it to the room, where Julie was, at the same time. She was sitting on the cot. Panic stricken and breathing rapidly. When she saw John, she lept off the cot and ran to him.

“Oh John! Tell me, tell me it was just a dream.” She paused trying to catch her breath. “I… I… I… saw grandpa and grandma. They were alive… and… young?”

John held his sister in his arms, trying to comfort her. “Shhh, it’s okay. You’re Safe.” Holding her tight he continued to talk to her. “Julie, it wasn’t a dream. We are on the Ice Planet. They are here, we made it…”

Julie took a step back. “Seth.” She said.

John shot a look back to Seth. He was holding a gun. “Listen. We’re going back down to that room. I’m not finished with my answers yet. This stunt of yours won’t keep me from finding out the truth!”

John sighed. “Seth, put the gun down. Whatever answers you want, I’m sure we’ll find them.”

Seth gestured to the door. “Get moving. We’re going back to the room.”

“Paranoid much?” John asked.

Seth didn’t respond, he only continued to point the gun.

As they started making their way down the hallway, John looked to Seth. “You do realize at some point I am going to take that gun away from your cold dead hands right?”

Seth laughed, “Try it and you’ll get a bullet in the forehead. Keep moving.” He pushed John forward.

John swung around and kicked the gun out of Seth’s hand. It went sliding across the floor to Julie’s feet.

Julie looked down at the gun.

“Pick it up!” John screamed.

Julie flashed back to the tunnel on the space station, when she and Seth were in a deadlock. Why was she remembering this, it didn’t make sense. She stood there frozen, unable to move.

Seth decked John to the ground and ran over to Julie. Picking up the weapon, he shoved her towards her brother. “I said, keep moving!”

They started walking again.

John looked back to Seth and then to Julie. “Why didn’t you pick it up?”

Julie shrugged, “I … I’m not sure.”

Chapter Three: The Truth

As they came back to the room, Seth had put his gun away. Threatening John and Julie of certain death if they said a word about his concealed weapon, they entered the room quietly.

Eric and Rebecca still sat at the table with a concerned look on their faces. They sat and watched as the others rejoined them.

Eric looked to John who had blood trickling down his face. “What happened to you?”

John shrugged it off. “Nothing, your doorways are shorter than I’m used to.”

Eric cocked his head to one side… he’d have to find out later it seemed.

“How are you dear?” Rebecca asked Julie.

Julie nodded. “I’m… I’m… how do you think I am? I’m a mess.”

Eric smiled as he reached over to her placing her hand in his. “It’s alright, we won’t hurt you.”

They spent the next half hour explaining to Julie all that they had revealed to John and Seth.

All the while, Seth was pacing around the room. Muttering to himself. Truly the work of a madman. After Julie had been caught up he approached the table. “Now that she’s caught up with the truth, let’s get to the bottom of things.”

Eric looked to Seth. His cold stare was still trained on him. “Now, what was this you were saying about how we destroyed Earth?”

Seth nodded, “That’s right dead man. You and your girlfriend here destroyed Earth.” He said, “The Tribunal doesn’t have all of the details about how it happened, but we do know it was you.”

John interrupted. “I think it had to do with this planet’s atmosphere. When your creators scanned your FTL shuttle, is must have left some kind of radiation. When the shuttle made it back to Earth that radiation caused a massive implosion at Earth’s core. It was gone in a matter of seconds.”

“I see.” Eric said. Looking to Seth he paused. “No wonder you watched me die. Tell me, was it pleasing to you to see a man die?”

Seth laughed, “You deserved it. Sure it was old age, but you deserved dying. Killing billions of your own people.” He folded his arms. “If I had it my way, I would have killed you myself. It would have been a pleasure to watch you suffer in a slow agonizing painful death.”

“Gee thanks.” Eric replied. “So you’re here for revenge now, is that it?”

Seth smiled. “I am now. You killed my family. I won’t allow you to hurt anyone else.”

John sighed. “Seth, that was a mistake. They didn’t mean to do it on purpose.”

Seth stood, he didn’t want to hear anything else. Exiting the room the butt of his gun peaked out his back pocket.

“We should keep an eye on him.” Rebecca said noticing the gun.

“He’ll be fine.” Eric said, “Maybe he’ll wander up to the surface.”

Rebecca shot Eric a look.

“I’m only kidding. It’s late, you should get some sleep. We can continue this discussion in the morning.”

They went their separate ways for the night.

Chapter Four: Scheming

Seth was at work inside the shuttle. Looking over the various controls and familiarizing himself with the systems. In the time he had been with John and Julie they had been flying the shuttle, he hadn’t much time to look over the modifications.

“What are you doing in here?’ A voice asked.

Seth looked around, “Who said that?”

Looking around there was no one to be seen.

“What are you Scheming?” The voice asked again.

Seth reached for his gun. “Who said that?!” He screamed. Walking outside the shuttle he circled it twice. “I demand to know who said that!”

“No one, and everyone.”

“Seth” it spoke his name.

“Who are you?” He asked, “I told you to leave me alone!”

“Who are we indeed.” The voice whispered. “We are many, too many for you to handle.”

Seth bolted out of the bay, leaving the shuttle alone.

Eric and Rebecca stood in an observation room watching him leave. “That should spook him for a little bit.”

Rebecca looked to Eric, “Are you sure that was a good idea?”

Eric laughed, “What? You wouldn’t believe what he use to do in school. I’m just getting back at him for all those years of torment.” Looking down at the shuttle, Eric smiled. “Besides, if that doesn’t help prove he’s not at all with it, I’m not sure what will.”

Rebecca shrugged. “Do you think we’re going about this the right way? The Argians wanted them to come back… it took years and Eric and Rebecca didn’t even make it. They died.”

Eric nodded. “I know.” He rested against the ledge. “We have to be doing the right thing. It was our makers wish in the event that something happened to Earth. I’m afraid that we won’t be around to see it take place.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Rebecca said. Eric brought her close and held her in his arms. “The war is over, life can only get better from here. We’ve lived a good long life. They’ve been able to give us something the real Eric and Rebecca couldn’t have. Talk about a unique perspective.”

“I hope you’re right.” Rebecca said. “I hope you’re right.”

Eric sighed. “Me too.”

“We’re playing with fire, you do know this.”

Eric nodded. “Yes I understand.”

They left the bay. Knowing what they had to do wasn’t easy, but they had to do it. Who were they to question their makers wishes? Sure the makers weren’t around, but their presence lingered. They were made for this purpose. Their true purpose.

Chapter Five: Plains Of Fire

The next morning, John and Julie awoke early to find Eric and Rebecca. They wondered throughout the underground caverns only to find them empty. Even Seth wasn’t to be found.

“Eric?!” John yelled down a hallway, no answer. “Rebecca!”

Still no answer.

As they continued down the hall, a bright light shone through an open doorway.

“Did we check down here yet?” John asked his sister.

Julie shook her head. “I don’t recall coming down this hallway before. Let’s check it out.”

As they made their way down the hallway, the heat increased. It had been freezing cold, but now something was putting off a great amount of warmth.

Reaching the end of the hallway, they could see what was the cause of it all. A device had been activated. Stepping inside the great room, Eric and Rebecca were at two control centers. “Morning, you’re just in time!”

John looked at Julie who shook her head.

“What’s going on?” John asked.

Before Eric could respond, Seth came in the room with his gun drawn. Taking Julie by her neck, he pressed the gun against the side of her head. “Yes, what is going on here?”

Eric and Rebecca looked over. “Seth, put that gun away before you kill us all!”

Seth shook his head. “No, I want answers!”

“What more do you want? We’ve given you everything we know!”

Seth cocked the gun, “Not good enough! Never good enough!”

John eyed Seth out of the corner of his eye. Waiting to make his move.

Seth’s hand were trembling. Julie didn’t resist. “You both deserve to die!” He pointed his weapon at Eric then Rebecca.

Eric tried to approach the two. Seth trained his weapon on him. “Don’t even try it dead man. Don’t try it. I would love to kill you right now. But I want answers.” He paused, “I want the power source for this planet, you’ll hand it over now.”

Eric sighed. “We can’t do that. It’s impossible.”

Seth shook his head. “I don’t believe you.”

“Seth, the planet is the power source.” Eric said.

Seth put the gun back to Julie’s head. “You willing to bet your granddaughter’s life on that?” Cocking the gun, he felt her trembling in his arms. “Shhh… keep remembering.”

John shot Seth a look… remembering? Is that how he’s controlling her? “Julie, fight it!”

Julie stood there frozen in a trance.

“You’re as stubborn as your father was. Tom. Never could rely on him for anything.” Eric said. “He wasn’t even that great of an officer, I recall several times Captain Andrews wanted to throw him out an airlock.”

Seth took a step back. “He was a great man, don’t say that!”

“Do you know what he told me about your dad?” Eric continued “He told me how he had to accept him aboard his ship because all the other qualified tactical officers were taken.”

Seth’s arm holding the gun dropped a little.

“Look at you. Half a man your father was. Having to rely on genetic re sequencing to manage the years of life.” Eric took a step forward “What price did you pay for that? I doubt you were this crazy before they started messing with your innards.”

Seth’s arm dropped more. “What?”

“Oh you heard me son.” He shot a glance to John as if to say get ready.

“I’m not your son!” Seth yelled.

In that time, John made his move. Throwing himself towards Seth’s direction he caught Seth off guard. The gun went sliding across the floor towards Rebecca. She picked it up and aimed it at Seth.

With the telepathic link between Seth and Julie broken, Julie ran for cover back out in the hallway.

“You want answers?” John asked, “You can go to hell!” He punched Seth across the face. “You’ve terrorized us enough.”

Seth didn’t drop, John’s punches didn’t faze him.

“That all you got John? Come on, you’ve got to do better than that.”

Two shots rang out. Seth dropped to the ground dead.

Rebecca lowered the gun. “I don’t have time for this.”

Eric and John exchanged glances. Did that really just happen? Julie peered from the hallway slowly making sure everything was alright.

Dropping the gun to the floor, she focused back to the control console. “We have to complete our final task.”

John approached Rebecca “Your what? Your final task?”

Rebecca nodded. “Yes John. The message for you to come back here, it was meant for all the remaining survivors of Earth. Before long, this planet will be habitable for all of your refugees. They’ll have a place to call home again.”

John shook his head “I don’t understand.”

Eric walked back over to his console. “We’re giving you back what you deserve. A planet full of life. This device, The Plains Of Fire, will reconfigure this planet to be exactly like Earth. You’ll be able to live out the rest of your years the way it should be.”

John stammered, “But… but why?”

“John, no one deserves to be without a home. From what you’ve told us, you never knew Earth. Let us make up for the past mistakes of our makers, and the devastation that damn radiation caused. Let us give you a home.”

Deeming it was safe, Julie entered the room. Looking down at Seth’s lifeless body she moved his hand with her foot. Yep dead.

“Think of it as a gift.” Rebecca said. “I’m sure your grandparents would have done the same.”

“What about you?” John said. “How will this affect your dependency on this planet?”

“Everything comes with a price.” Eric said. “To use an old phrase, nothing in life is free. You have to pay the piper.”

“No!” Julie said. “We can learn so much from you! You have our grandparents memories and experiences.”

“Sorry dear.” Rebecca “It has to be done. Let us do this for you.”

Tears streamed down Julie’s eyes. She couldn’t believe this was happening.

“Tell them of us. Let them know we did it for them. For you.” Rebecca said. Picking up a device, she handed it over to John. “Here are documents. All of our research and that of our creators. I’m sure you’ll find a suitable place for these in a library or … something.”

John nodded. “I will.” Looking to Julie, he smiled then looking back to Rebecca and Eric “I only wish we could have gotten to know you more.”

Eric nodded “You’ll have to do some reading. I imagine the real Eric left behind something to remember him by…. we only want to do the same.”

Stepping over Seth’s dead body, John smirked. His smirk disappeared as he realized that Seth didn’t really have a chance. Once a slave to the Tribunal, you were theirs forever. Whatever Hell Seth ended up in, John hoped it wouldn’t be to rough a ride. “He deserved better.”

John and Julie left the room and made their way back to the shuttle.

Chapter 6: Final Goodbyes

As Rebecca’s shuttle rose up out of the atmosphere of the ice planet. John and Julie looked down at the world, it had already started to change its appearance into that of Earth. John imagined land masses wouldn’t be the same, but there would be oceans, mountains, trees.

Julie hoped to have an island full of penguins, but that would remain to be seen.

Opening one final radio channel, John and Julie said their goodbyes.

Firing up the engines, the shuttle went into FTL travel on its way to their old home, Space Station Beta in old Earth orbit.

Down on the planet, Eric and Rebecca watched as the structure of the planet started to change and take on a new form. The cavern in which they stood began to tremble and quake. Holding each other tightly, Eric and Rebecca enjoyed a final kiss.

At that moment, they fully realized they had done the right thing.

Epilogue

Sixty-three years after Earth was destroyed. Another planet came to life. It became a new Earth ready for population. Once the new Earth was made known, ship after ship came to populate the planet. People came with their children. Grandchildren brought their grandparents. Daughters brought mothers. Sons brought fathers.

It was time to begin again. Time to start anew and realize the potential the human race had. Having been through a great and terrible war, the civilizations of new Earth had found a place to rebuild and begin again. All it would take is time.

John and Julie stood overlooking a hillside where two grave stones stood.

“Eric. Rebecca. I didn’t have the chance to know you long. But for what it’s worth, thank you.” John said. Putting his arm around his sister they made their way back to their new home.

The End

Ice Planet

Chapter One: Now You Know

Date: December 26, 2162
Location: Old Earth Orbit, Space Station Beta

“My planet was dead to begin with.” John said “Though it was not my planet, not entirely. It was my grandfather’s planet, and his fathers before him.” He was standing in the sitting room where his grandfather, Eric, had told him of how Earth was no more; and after that he watched the Tribunal take his grandfather away, dead. The memories were not pleasant, they were painful and bitter. He picked up the picture of his grandmother, the same picture his grandfather look at often when he thought about the past.

“That was very brave of our grandfather to give you that information knowing what his actions caused.” A female voice said. “His life.”

John deactivated a recording device and turned away from a bookshelf to the doorway where his siter was barely inside the room. “Julie. What are you doing here?” He hadn’t noticed the door open or her even docking with the station. It had been a long time of silence for him and now that there was someone to talk to, he wasn’t quite sure if it was good or bad. Julie was family so it was at least a step in a good direction.

Julie walked closer to her brother. “Life on the moon turns into cold dark nights these days.” John shot her a look that said what are you talking about. Julie ignored her brother for a moment. As she looked around the room she approached a large bookshelf. Julie scanned the titles making note of only a few she would be interested in reading. After she finished browsing she turned back to John who was still trying to figure out why she had made the long trip to see what he was up to. “It’s been three wees, mother is worried about you. John. What on Earth are you doing up here?”

John smiled back. “We’re not on Earth, so I could say I’m doing nothing.” He replied with a smirk on his face. “I’m nore sure you’d want to know.” He was still carrying the picture not noticing the frame in his hands. “I’ve been searching for a shuttle.” There, part of the secret was out. Of course now that part of the door was open, she would want to walk the rest of the way inside with more questions.

“A shuttle?” Julie asked. She was confused by what her brother was saying.

He only briefly explained to her what Eric, their grandfather, had said. John didn’t want to bring Julie fully uip to date in order to protect her from harm. He had seen what the Tribunal did to Eric and didn’t want that to happen to more of his family members.

“What is this all about John?”

John shook his head. “I cannot tell you.” In his mind he wanted to tell her the full truth. He needed help. He wanted help. But it would be wrong to endanger her life. John had been looking for that shuttle ever since his grandfather told him of its existence. But he had no luck with his search and was running out of options.”I’m sorry.” He turned his attention back to the picture.

Julie took the picture out of John’s hand and set it roughly down on a nearby table causing the back to fall off. They watched in silence as the back landed on the table and a piece of notepaper that had been hiding behind the picture fell to the ground. When Julie realized what happened she knelt down and picked the paper up. “I’m so sorry.” Julie began to say. she stopped suddenly, noticing something. It looked like directions or possible architect plans for the station. “Hold on, what’s this?” She unfolded the paper and studied the hand drawn schematic for a moment.

John snatched the paper gently from his sister’s hand “I’ll take that”, it was pretty brittle. From the looks of it, his grandfather must of hid the paper a very long time ago.

Julie was clearly upset with her brother. “Well? What is it?” She folded her arms across her chest and glared at John waiting for an answer. Would he give it to her, or would she have to wait and find out. Would she ever find out? If her brother wouldn’t give the answer, she was determined to get the information out of him one way or another.

After a few more moments of studying the paper John pocketed it and looked back to his sister. “Oh nothing, just a drawing of an outdated home a while ago on Earth.” He said trying to sidesetp the moment and move on without having to explain anything. “Why don’t you return home, tell mom I’ll be there shortly.”

Julie shook her head, unfolded her arms, and shook a finger at John. “Oh no you don’t! You’re going to find out where that paper leads. I’m not that stupid. You’re lying. I’m comming with you to find out what’s up.”

John tried to argue the point and get out of it. “I tell you it’s nothing! Just do as I asked. Please.” He waited expecting her to obey his orders but she didn’t move an inch.

Julie simply stared back at her brother. “We’re not on a ship John, and you’re not my commanding officer. I’m older than you remember? You can’t boss me around.” She stuck a pointed finger at John’s chest a few times clearly making her point.

John, knowing she wasn’t about to move, sighed his surrender. “Oh all right.” he pulled the schematic back out of his pocket and held it up for her to see. “This is a map grandpa drew so he wouldn’t forget where he hid grandmother’s shuttle.” He paused. “I intend on finding that shuttle and taking it back to a planet that requested our grandparents to visit again.”

“Why?” Julie asked. “You didn’t know these people. We wern’t even alive yet.”

John picked up the alien device and handed it to Julie. “Read what that says.” He watched as Julie took the device from him and stared at the alien language. She turned it over and read the short phrase requesitng a return visit; then looked back to John who was ready to continue with his argument.

“Now listen to this.” John said as he picked up a recording device and played part of Eric’s parting words. As the voice of the dead spoke, Julie sank down to the floor until she was sitting with her legs crossed. Hearing her grandfather’s voice again was a little disturbing, she hadn’t been fully prepared for it.

“We were wrong, this device had nothing to do with what happened. I want you to travel back to the Ice Planet John. Find out why they wanted us to travel back to their planet. Now I really don’t have much time, only a few seconds. Listen to me carefully. Use this room for your research, all of my technical diarys are here. You should find them most useful. Rebecca’s original shuttle is here as well. I don’t have time to show you where it is, but it’s here believe me.”

“Now I know.”

John nodded. “Now you know.” He paused trying to figure out the right words to say to her. “What are we going to do about it?”

“We…” Julie said not fully recognizing that John had just fully enlisted her help. She was still focused on hearing her grandfather’s voice.

“Yeah.” John said. “You wanted to be apart of this so now you’re on.” He set the recording device down on the table. “I will warn you. If anyone finds out we took that shuttle to that planet, the Tribunal will be on our tail before you can say gotcha.” He said allowing her a way out. “If you don’t want to go through with this, I understand.”

Julie stood up slowly hoping she wouldn’t lose her balance. She was still in a state of shock, but that shock would soon leave her body and allow her to focus on the task at hand. “Let’s go find that shuttle.”

John nodded his approval, took the schematic out of his pocket, and handed it to Julie. “You were always better at reading maps…”

She accepted the paper and smiled, she was now part of the team.

Chapter Two: What to do With Them

Date: December 27, 2162
Location: Dark Side of the Moon

In an isolated section of the Moon, the Tribunal sat in council. The room was fairly small in size, nine people were seated around a table made out of oak. They had been in session for a few hours and were discussing a matter of utmost importance. A man seated at the head of the table looked over several computer printouts. After scanning the papers for a moment, he looked to the other council members.

“I am pleased with your work. Everyone who had knowledge of Earth’s destruction has been properly dealt with and eliminated.” He smiled. For the majority of the cases the people that held knowledge of Earth’s destruciton had been easy to track down. There had been a few that were difficult to find at first, but eventually they were apprehended and the devices in their arms were activated providing a nice painless death. “Let’s move on to other concerns. Over the past thirty years population on the moon has grown rapidly. Before long it will be completely filled and there will be no more space for expansion. Rumors have risen about relocation to other planets.” He paused. “To do so would mean suicide. We do not have the resources to relocate.”

“Tom, what about the FTL project?” A council member named Trina asked.

George, another council member, answered her question. “Useless. It was a doomed project from the get go. A failure. We don’t know how to create a stable bubble around the ship so time stays the same for its occupants as that of the Moon.”

Tom, the head council member, nodded in agreement. “That’s right. There were speculations that Eric Tompson tried to refit his wife’s shuttle with an upgraded version of the FTL device but we don’t even know where that shuttle is.” He tapped two fingers on the desk. “Then there’s the situation about his grandson John. I have suspicions that Eric told John some information. Which brings me to our next subject, what to do with them.”

A man seated at the end of the table slowly raised his hand. “I have an idea.” He stood from his chair to voice his opinion. “How about we track them down? We were able to monitor the others, why can’t we track them? Granted they don’t have the arm units, but we can still follow them.” He stood in complete silence waiting for a motion from Tom.

“All right.” Tom said after carefully considering the man’s idea. “Report all information directly to me no matter how insignificant. Good Luck Seth, you’re dismissed.”

Seth smiled at the news, gathered his briefcase and other belongings, and turned around to exit out the door.

After Seth left the room Tom continued talking. “I don’t know if I can trust him. He’s gone against me in the past.” He picked up a pencil. “If Seth fails in his assignment, I will go after them myself. I knew their grandfather quite well, they must be stopped. Whatever they are doing, they must be stopped.” He interlocked his fingers tightly and with a dark smile on his face dismissed the Tribunal.

Chapter Three: Gaining Access

Date: December 27, 2162
Location: Old Earth Orbit, Space Station Beta

John and Julie were down in a deep access tunnel of their grandfather’s station in what would be Earth’s orbit if it were still there. They were crawling in a cramped space underneath their grandfathe’rs living section of the station. When he first opened the access hatch, John thought the entire section would be full of cobwebs and spiders, he was partly correct. Therre were a few cobwebs here and there, but so far he hadn’t seen, or at least noticed, any spiders to claim those cobwebs. He was rather pleased there were no obstructions that might get in their way, at least not yet. As they continued crawling, the space infront of them came to a dead end with options to the right or the left.

John looked to Julie was was holding the map. “Which way?”

Julie took a few moments to analyze the information on the paper. As a child she had enjoyed explorint man made caves inside the moon. This was a little different. On the moon she was floating and was wearing a suit that protected her from the vacuum of space. Here she relied on artificial gravity and a jumpsuit designed for ease of movement in a cramped environment. “That way.” She said as she moved towards the left access tunnel.

After a few more minutes of crawling they came to a large open space that would allow them to stand. As John looked around he noted two doors to choose from. One looked like it had been well warn and used, but the looked looked as though it hadn’t been used in ages. “Let me guess. Door number two right?” He said as he pointed to the unused door.

Julie nodded her head and began to recite a poem.

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

John looked to his sister with a smile. “Always reciting literature.”

Julie smiled back. “Someone has to.” She walked up to the door and examind it. A large access panel was in the middle. “Take a look at this.” She didn’t know what to make of it.

John approached the door and stared at the panel. “This is an old style binary control access.” He said. “I’ve seen something like this when I was studying history on the Internet. It was used mostly in the late 1900′s and a little after that into the 2090′s.”

“What do we do?” Julie asked.

John punched a few buttons which activated the panel. A small keyboard appeared from a slot in the door. John stared at the keyboard for a few moments. He pressed a few keystrokes that allowed the system to boot up. Several words, numbers, and crude two dimensional images appeared on the screen.

IDENTIFY YOURSELF

John proceeded to enter his name using the keyboard. He had always been interested in older operating systems.

“Where’s the touch screen?” Julie asked. She clearly didn’t understand the history of computers.

John shook his head. “They didn’t have those until the year 2132.” After he finished typing his name, John hit the enter key.

IDENTITY UNKNOWN

The computer responded.

RETURNING TO PRIMARY STARTUP MODE

A few seconds passed and the screen changed it’s appearance to when John first booted the system. John looked to Julie and then back to the computer.

“What about just a last name?” Julie suggested.

John keyed in Tompson and pressed enter. Again the computer didn’t like what he keyed in, went through the same error message, and ended back at the beginning.

“What about Grandpa’s name.” Julie said.

John nodded and keyed in Eric Tompson. As he pressed enter, the screen changed.

ACCESS GRANTED

Underneath were several questions relating to their grandfather’s life.

“He had to make this complicated didn’t he.” Julie said as she gave a sigh. She never was able to be calm about things and had a tendency to become stressed a little too soon before possible avenues were explored.

John smiled. “You know how grandpa liked his privacy.” He took a small device out, of his pocket, and copied the list of seven questions down. “Let’s go back to the sitting room and study his journals.”

Julie nodded her approval and they headed back towards the access tunnnel that would take them up to the main deck of the station.

As they entered the sitting room John walked over to a bookcase on one end as Julie went to the other. John had a feeling their search would take a while to complete, there were over a thousand books in the room. He didn’t dread the task, John had always been interested in finding out more information about his grandfather’s life. Now he had the opportunity to do so.

John picked up a book and read its title to himself. Theory to FTL. “This might be worth looking into later.” He said as he set the book down on an end table. John proceeded to scan the titles of the other books. The majority of them were technical journals and other material on space flight.

On the other side of the room Julie was searching through book titles herself. SHe picked up one near the end, flipped it open and started to read. It walked mostly of Eric’s life in his later years. She kept reading with deep intent in the information on the pages. Julie took a few notes that might help in getting through the security system on the door.

Date: Two Days Later, December 29, 2162
Location: Old Earth Orbit, Space Station Beta

John and Julie were still hard at work searching for information in the volumes of Eric’s journals. They managed to find answers for six of the seven questions on the list John made.

“What are we looking for again?” Julie asked while brushing her dark colored hair away from her face.

John looked at his list. “Who won the final game of poker on October 7th, 2154.” John laughed as he gave the response. “He sure has a unique security system huh?”

Julie frowned. She was becomming more stressed as each hour passed by. “Why don’t you just bypass the system.” She said. “You must have an advanced knowledge about computers to do that.”

John hesitated. “I was wondering how long it would take you to figure that out.” A partial smile formed on his face. Would she be angry with him or not.

Julie stood up from the floor, she was starting to become agitated. “What?! You mean you could of gotten passed that door the first time we saw it!”

John nodded as his smile grew. “If I would of done that we wouldn’t have found out all of this information about grandpa. Besides, I needed to come up here to get his technical journals and papers anyway.” He held up a few books in his hand.

Julie walked over to her brother and took the books away from him. She exited the room in a quick pace. John followed her, he was going to have to find a way to make things right. He had seen his sister angry before. “Hell hath no fury as a woman’s scorn.”John said under his breath.

Chapter Four: Rebecca

Date: December 29, 2162
Location: Tunnel Access Underneath Space Station Beta

Once again John and Julie were on their way towards the shuttle behind the computer sealed door. This time, however, Julie was crawling a few meters ahead of her brother. As she reached the room with the doors she paced around waiting for John to show up. When he did she gave him a smile that showed she was still angry with him.

John stood from the tunnel, entered the room, and walked over to the computer panel on the door. As the system began to boot up, he pressed a few keys that bypassed the entire sequence.

ACCESS GRANTED

John proceeded to key in more commands at the keyboard. “All right, that should get us in.” He said while pressing the enter key.

SYSTEM ACCESS GRANTED

“You did it!” Julie said with excitement.

Another line of text appeared on the screen.

ENTER AUTHORIZATION CODE

Underneath was a brief explaination.

THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN BYPASSED BY UNKNOWN MEANS

DECEMBER 29, 2162 AT 04:00 AM

FAILSAFE PROTOCOLS ARE NOW ACTIVE

“What does that mean?” Julie asked.

John re-read the information, before answering, to make sure he understood it correctly. “It knows we didn’t answer the questions. We hopped the fence instead of going through the gate.” He paused. “Grandpa set this password system up in the event anyone attempted to do what we did.”

“Can’t you bypass this as well?”

John shook his head. “Nope. Sorry but the backup is a much more advanced system than the primary access codes.” he stared at the display. “We need the password, and to give you some more stress we only have three chances. Just like baseball.”

“I always hated that game.” Julie said. “How about the name of the ship he served on. Or the captain he served under.”

John shook his head. “Something more personal.”

Julie pondered that one for a few minutes. “His dog? No… His station? No, that wouldn’t be it.” She scratched the back o fher head as though it would help. “I got it. How about grandma’s name.”

John nodded. “It’s worth a shot.” He keyed in Rebecca, pressed enter and waited for the computer to respond.

ACCESS GRANTED

The panel turned off and the door opened. On the other side, of the door, was a room twice the size of the room they were standing in. A shuttle large as life was in the center of the room. John accessed a lighting control and the room was no longer dark. As they entered, John noticed that the shuttle was covered with cobwebs from head to two.

John looked at the shuttle with awe. He had never seen a private shuttle before. The only people who owned them were either in the military or very rich. He was none of the above and had therefore only seen and been on public transport shuttles that were constantly breaking down because of stress on their hulls. “Let’s get her cleaned up.” He said while picking up a bucket that had rags in it.

Julie took a rag from the bucket and started to brush the ship taking cobwebs with it. As she did so, she wondered if they would have any luck with getting the shuttle up and running again.

One Hour Later

John was finishing his polishing job on the shuttle. She looked almost brand new. There were still a few scratches here and there, but John overlooked those marks. What mattered most was if the shuttle would fly or not. He walked over to an access hatch and opened it. The door creaked and squeeked a little as the door opened upwards.

Julie stood in front of the shuttle with a look of disbelief on her face. “Do you honestly think we’ll get this thing working again?”

John nodded “We have to.” He stepped inside the shuttle, found one of the pilots chairs and sat down at the console. He pressed a few switches which brought the main core on-line. “After all these years it still works. That’s a good sign.” He said. “Come in here! I want you to see this.”

Julie walked around the shuttle to where the door was and stepped inside. As she did, she took a look around. “This is kind of… interesting.” She walked towards the back of the shuttle and stared at the floor. “What a mess.” Several pieces of equipment cluttered the deck. “These must be the parts grandpa was working on.”

John looked towards her direction. “The FTL device?”

Julie gave a nod. “I think so.” She knelt down next to the pieces. “How are we suppose to put this together? It doesn’t look like anything.”

“Think of it as a puzzle.” John said as he picked up a book that he brought with him from Eric’s library. He stood from the chair and joined his sister at the back of the shuttle. “We have the blueprints right here.” He flipped open the book and skimmed through the pages until he found instructions to put the device together. “This might take some time.” John explained. “I’m no expert when it comes to this stuff.”

Julie nodded “I’m going to go back to the main deck. I want to read some more of granpa’s life.” She stood from the deck and exited the shuttle.

John figured as much. Julie didn’t understand anything when it came to technical terms and equipment. He picked up a few devices off the floor and began to analyze them. Hoping to put together his grandfather’s design.

Chapter Five: I know you’re here!

Date: December 30, 2162
Location: Space Station Beta, Airlock Access

Julie approached the airlock after being summoned by the doorbell. She checked an external security camera to see who it was. A man wearing a black trenchcoat was on the other side waiting for the door to open. She recognized the ‘uniform’ almost immediately. It was a member of the Tribunal. He was up to something and she didn’t like it. Julie left the airlock and headed towards the access tunnel to tell John.

Outside the airlock Seth was getting tired of waiting. He took a device out of his coat and placed it to the door. The device attached to the door upon contact, it hung there ready for use. Seth pressed a few buttons on the device. A LED display lit up.

WORKING

ACCESS OVERRIDDEN

As the doors opened, Seth walked inside. He continued down the long hallway until he reached the sitting room. Books were cluttered all over the floor. “What are they doing?” he said to himself. He exited the room trying to find John and Julie. “I know you’re here!” Seth yelled out.

Down in the access tunnel Julie was moving as quickly as she could to get to John. They would never make it to the Ice Planet if the Tribunal had their way. As she continued crawling, a bright light appeared from behind. She froze for a moment and turned her head to see who it was. Seth had found her. He was moving fast and would catch up with her soon. Julie stopped looking behind her, looked forward, and kept moving. She was only a few feet from the split in the tunnel. If Seth didn’t have that light shining on her she might of been able to lose him, but that wasn’t possible. As she came to the option to go left or right she moved to the right going the opposite direction away from John and the shuttle. For a brief moment the tunnel became darker. She crawled faster hoping to find a place to hide. Julie had never seen that part of the tunnel system. Therefore she didn’t know what to expect. As she kept crawling, a fear deep inside became reality. The tunnel came to a dead end. Direclty infront of her was a closed access hatch. Julie looked through a small window on the hatch. All she could see were twinkling stars in the midst of a black sea. If she opened the hatch, the tunnel would depressurize and she would be pulled out into space. Julie put her arms around her legs and brought them close to her chest hugging them tightly. She was cornered, there was no way out except that of death. All Julie could do was wait for the Tribunal Agent to arrive.

Chapter Six: Let Me Help You

Date: December 30, 2162
Location: Docking Bay, Space Station Beta

In the docking bay, John was still working on the shuttle’s FTL device. He only had a third of it assembled. John was learning to exercise a lot of patience and self control as he worked on the shuttle’s systems. He was growing more tired as the hours ticked by. John’s body was telling him to rest while his head was pushing him to keep going. He decided to follow the instincts of his mind. As he picked up a piece of equipment, John started to shake a little. It had been a while since he’d eaten anything and was beginning to feel the effects. He stood from the deck, “I need a clear head for this.” John said as he exited the shuttle and walked towards the outer room. As John reached the room he stopped dead in his tracks. Julie was standing next to the access tunnel and she wasn’t alone.

“What are you two doing?” Seth asked as he raised a gun and pointed it at John.

“What is this?” John asked in a tone full of anger. “I demand to know your intentions!”

Seth shook his head. “No questions from you, just answers.” He said as he cocked the gun preparing it to discharge at a slight pull of the trigger. “The Tribunal knows you’re doing something here.”

John scratched his head. Something about all of this didn’t seem quite right. “This isn’t usually how the Tribunal tracks people.” He said with a straight face. He looked at Seth wondering if he could disarm him. Probably not. John then gave a slight smile. “You’re not following your standard procedures.”

Seth nodded. “I know, but what the Tribunal doesn’t know won’t hurt them.” Seth lowered the gun for a moment as he realized that he was taking matters into his own hands.

“Seth, what are you doing here?” John asked.

Julie was stunned. “You know him?” She was a tad surprised that the information shocked her. Julie didn’t really know much about John’s friends or his social acquaintances.

John nodded his head slowly. “Last time I saw him he was entering the academy.” He turned his attention back to Seth. “Never thought you’d make it this far though.” He paused. “I also read about Tom, his grandfather, from the journals upstairs. Tom was the security officer aboard the Alaphei.” John paused. “Strange seeing you here.”

Seth uncocked the gun and holstered it. “Your information is partly right. Tom is my father.”

“How?” John said. “If that were the case, you’d be much older.”

Seth nodded his head. “I know. But once I joined the Tribunal, they experimented on me. I don’t age much anymore.” He looked to Julie and stared at her face. “In fact, I stopped aging after I turned 22.”

Sensing that he would be more cooperative John answered Seth’s first question. “My grandfather wanted me to complete a mission.” He walked towards Seth and stood in front of him.

Seth stood his ground. “You’re going to the Ice Planet.” He said. “Don’t be alarmed, I know all about the alien device, the mesage requesting for someone to go back, and the shuttle.” He paused, “And on top of all that you have an FTL Device that needs some work.”

John nodded his head. “Yes.”

“Why are you doing this?” Julie asked.

Seth turned to his side to face Julie. “Because I know what kind of future we, as a people, are capable of. Let me help you.”

John still wasn’t completely sure if he could trust Seth. But that was a rink he was willing to take. “Welcome aboard.” He said after a moment of thought. “But one slip and you’re history.”

Seth smiled. “I think I’ve heard that before.” He held out a hand for John to shake. “Agreed.”

John shook Seth’s hand with a tight grip. He wanted Seth to know that he was serious and that he meant business. “Before we continue, how about we head upstairs and get something to eat.” He walked towards the access tunnel. Maybe this will work after all, John thought to himself.

Julie eyed Seth closely. It would take some time for her to trust him. Only a few minutes ago he had been chasing her and now she was expected to accept him. She was curious how Seth was and how he acted before he joined the Tribunal. She had heard various stories and rumors of how instructors for the Tribunal treat people training to become Tribuanl Agents. The stories were difficult to hear at times. They had the capabilities to bring horrific nightmares to otherwise peaceful dreams. The thought made Julie shutter.

Seth walked closer to Julie. He wasn’t invading her personal space, but he certainly was close. Another inch and he would be too close for comfort. She reasoned that even though Seth was going aginst the Tribunal, his conditioning was with him all the time. She liked to think of the conditioning as torture methods for loyalty.

“Why didn’t you tell him what hapened in the tunnel?” Seth asked as he stared into her blue eyes. It was as if he was peering into her deeper inner most thoughts. The place of the mind where people usually hide their true self and where their fears reside.

Julie tried to brush it aside. She took a step backward trying to increase the space between the two of them. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Seth shook his head. “You know exaclty what I’m talking about.” He replied. “You wanted to pull that lever. You wanted to eject us both into space.” Seth paused for a moment. “The only thing I don’t understand is why you didn’t go through with it.” He put a finger to his right temple. “Let’s recall the past.” Seth began to describe the events that transpired in the tunnel.

Tunnel Access 20 Minutes Earlier

…Julie put her arms around her legs and brought them close to her chest hugging them tightly. She was cornered, there was no way out except that of death. All Julie could do was wait for the Tribunal Agent to arrive.

As Julie was huddled next to the access hatch she looked around desperately hoping to find something to use as a weapon. She noticed two levers next to the door, one would seal the tunnel a few feet before the hatch and the other would open the hatch allowing deadly access into space. She could defeat the agent while saving her brother’s life at the same time. As Julie stared at the lever a bright light hit her face.

“You have no where to run.” A voice said in a calm cold tone. “You’re cornered, trapped like a defensless puppy.” The voice said as it came closer. Seth kept moving until he was a foot in front of Julie, there was enough room to seal the tunnel.

Julie reached for the ejection lever and held her hand on it ready to pull it down. “If I activate this we’ll die.” She said.

“Yes, but so will your brother.” Seth said. He began to move closer to Julie. “I don’t think you want to risk it.”

Julie nodded. “You’re right.” She moved her hand over to the first lever and pulled it. The tunnel sealed behind Seth with a loud clanking sound. He turned around and crawled to the door. Seth pulled out the same device he used on the airlock door and tried it on the seal infront of him, but had no success. The door was equipped with a type of shielding device that nothing could penetrate. Seth pulled out a gun and pointed it at the barrier.

“I wouldn’t try that.” Julie said. “I don’t know much about those fields, but I doubt they like bullets. They’ll probably bounce off and kill you.”

Seth knew she was right. He turned around and faced her. “Very cleaver.” He said. “Have you ever thought about joining the military?”

Julie reached for the second lever preparing to pull it. “This way John will still be alive.”

“But you’ll die in the process.”

Julie nodded. “Yep.” She gripped her hand tightly around the lever. As Julie feld the cold metal in her hand, she was hoping to find some other way to get out of the current situation. “Give up and I’ll let you go.”

Seth looked to Julie, he had no where to go. “You might be in control for now, but that won’t last long. If I die, another will come in my place. Your brother will always be followed.”

Julie smiled, she was gaining more confidence that she would have Seth eating out of her hand soon. “Yes, but he’ll defeat them just as I’ve defeated you.”

Seth nodded his head. “All right. You win.” He put his hands up showing that he surrendered.

Julie let go of the lever and opened the tunnel again. She pointed to the tunnel. “Let’s go.”

Docking Bay 20 Minutes Later

Julie staggered backwards after Seth closed the telepathic link to her mind. He had managed to tap direclty into her thoughts and in a way violated her. “What did you do to me?”

Seth held out his hands to steady her. As he grabbed ahold of her shoulders Seth gave his reply. “I’m sorry, it’s another trait the Tribunal has experimented with on me.” He paused. “So, why didn’t you tell?”

Julie regained her sense of balance. “I didn’t feel it necessary.” She said in a calm tone.

Seth nodded. “Okay, so you really don’t want to tell me. Fine…”

Their conversation was cut short as John’s voice came down the tunnel. “Hey, are you guys comming or not?”

Seth and Julie headed to the tunnel that would take them to the upper level. As she left the docking bay, Julie started to wonder why she hadn’t pulled that hatch, if she did she wouldn’t have to worry about Seth anymore.

After the trio had something to eat, they were back down in the docking bay. Seth walked towards the shuttle and inspected the outside hull plating with a scanner. He was shocked at his findings. “The hull is almost at peak efficiency.” he made some more scans. “Usually I don’t come accross ships that are still intacted and operation after 62 years, this is truely amazing.”

John smiled. “Well the shuttle has been in storage for sometime now. She hasn’t been in open space since my grandparents put her here.”

“It’s a shame they had to steal from the government so you two could come along and complete some fantasy project.” Seth accused. “The Tribunal wondered for a very long time about what happened to this ship. Dad said it took quite a few favors just to track down the history records.” Seth said. He was irritated about the past, especially how Eric had fooled the government. “And even then he never did get…” Seth stopped as he realized that he was defending the people he had just sworn he was against about an hour ago. “Nevermind about that.” He walked inside the shuttle to allow time to cool off.

Julie and John exchanged glances. They were thinking the exact same thing. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to accept Seth on as part of the team. Julie was starting to fear a little more. She still wondered if her doubts about Seth would come to pass or stay hidden, unwilling to show themselves. She had enough time on her hands to find out. The three of them would be together for at least a few more days.

Chapter Seven: All Systems Go

Date: January 3, 2163
Location: Docking Bay, Space Station Beta

After a few days had gone by, the group was still working on the FTL device. Seth had been right they did need help with the task of making the device operational. If he hadn’t showed up, John would of been working on it for a lot longer than it was taking Seth to complete the job.

Inside the shuttle, Seth was halfway underneath a console working as fast as he could. As he promised, he sent communiques on a regular basis to his father. The transmissions contained lies that would keep the Tribunal from sending someone else to complete his assignment and realize what he was actually up to. As Seth worked on the console upgrading the system, he found himself to be impressed by the desgin. Even though it was old, Seth was interested in how they use to build the shuttles. Over the years the design improved dramatically allowing pilots more freedom and manuverability. He was also intrigued by the fact that the United States won the war by using such archaic devices and equipment.

“How’s it going?” Julie asked. She was carrying a book in her hand.

Seth was startled by the unannounced visitor, something that rarely happened. He had excellent hearing, usually. Seth bumped his head on the underside of the console. “Ow!” He said as he crawled out from the cramped space. Rubbing his head to ease the pain he replied. “Okay so far. How’s the search going for those technical journals?”

“This is what we’ve found so far.” Julie replied as she handed Seth the book. She kept a safe distance from Seth showing her distrust.

“Still don’t believe me huh?”

Julie had a blank expression on her face. Was Seth reading her mind using telepathy, or was he simply reading her body language. She couldn’t tell.

Seth smiled. “I was reading your body language actually.” He could read her mind so easily. Any passing thought he could pickup, translate it to his own memory patterns and store it for future use, if he wanted to.

“Am I interrupting something?” A deep voice asked.

Seth and Julie both looked to the shuttle’s access door and saw John standing there with more books in his hands. Both of them didn’t know how long John had been in the doorway. It didn’t bother Julie, she was use to her brother listening in on her conversations. Seth on the other hand had an expression full of shock on his face. Maybe he was starting to lose his touch and abilities. He had been around the Tompsons for a few days, maybe they were having some kind of affect on him. For the moment, he brushed the thought aside.

“Of course not.” Julie answered. “I was just giving Seth a book.” She exited the shuttle in a semi quick pace.

John walked towards Seth and handed him a few more books. “Found these as well, they should help out in your work.” Seth went to reach for the books and found that John wasn’t ready to let go, he had somehting more to say. “You stay away from my sister. Is that understood?”

Seth nodded “Yeah.”

John released the book giving Seth access to the material. “What can I assist you with?”

Date: Jan 5, 2163
Location: Docking Bay, Space Station Beta

Seth and John exited the shuttle and found Julie asleep on the floor. They had been working on the project for a while, usually without much sleep. John walked over to his sister and picked up her hand waking her up.

As she came to, Julie looked to her brother, then to Seth, and then back to her brother. “What’s going on?” While trying to become fully alert, she rubbed her eyes. Julie hadn’t meant to fall asleep like she did, it just happened. As she stood up, John explained what was going on.

“Everything seems to check out.” John said. “We can leave here anytime we want.” He looked back to Seth.

Seth gave a slight smile. “All systems go.” He was glad to have helped out in the project. He wasn’t totally confident everything would run smoothly, but at least he had an option to get away from the Tribunal.

Julie headed towards the tunnel. “I’ll go…”

John held up a storage container. “You already did that a few days ago remember?” The container had personal items they would need for the trip.

“Oh.” Julie replied. “I must have forgotten.” She took the container from her brother and boarded the ship.

Seth walked towards the shuttle. “Does she have a name?”

“The ship?” John asked. “No. I didn’t find anykind of documentation or plaque inside.” He surveyed the vessel and thought about what they were about to embark on. John was rather excited about the entire experience.

Seth nodded. “I thought so. Personal shuttles weren’t required to have names until a few years ago. But that usually didn’t stop people from giving them a name anyway.” He paused. “Any ideas?”

John paced back and forth for a moment. He wanted the name to be perfect, he wanted it to always be remembered, if they ever got back to Earth. “Let’s call her Rebecca.”

Seth stood in silence for a moment. He picked up a piece of equipment that was designed to apply letters to ships hulls, and handed it to John. “I think you should do the honors.”

John accepted the equipment and approached the ship. After a moment, he was finished. “Julie, come out here.”

Julie poked her head out the door. “Yeah?”

“What do you think?” John said as he pointed to the vessel.

Juile walked completely outside of the ship and stood by her brother. As she read the side of the ship, a smile formed on her face.

U.S.S. REBECCA

“It’s perfect.” She said. “What about a motto?”

Seth and John looked to each other and then back to Julie.

“Well,” Seth said. “Since you’re the one fond of poems, why don’t you think of something fitting.” He had gotten to know the family quite well over the past few days of working with them. It was true, he was growing soft.

“How about…” Julie began to say. She picked up the device that John held in his hands and applied several letters to the hull. When she was finished, Julie stepped back for John and Seth to look over her work.

“Yesterday is only a shadow in our existence”

“We’re good to go.” John said. They walked to the access door and entered the shuttle.

On the underside of the station, two large doors opened allowing the shuttle into open space for the first time in over 50 years. It was time to stretch her legs, it was time to complete a mission. Inside the shuttle, John and Seth were seated at the primary consoles at the front of the ship. Julie was at an aft station. She didn’t know much about technology, so she just sat there and didn’t touch anything.

“Bring the FTL device on-line.” John said.

Seth hit a few switches. The engine began to hum gently. When it was all on-line, Seth turned to John. “After going through your Grandfather’s records, I’ve managed to create a field that will encompass the ship. It should allow us to not lose time, like your grandparents so long ago.” He paused. “Of course, I don’t know how stable it is. It’s never been tested, so if it fails…”

“We’ll have lost some years.”

Seth nodded. “Yes.”

John looked to Julie. “You can always stay behind.”

Julie shook her head. “If we do this, we do it together.” She didn’t really have anything going for her back on the Moon. Who knows, maybe things will change if this does work. Julie thought to her self. She then stopped when she noticed Seth looked in her direction. Julie had forgotten for a moment that he could read her mind. As she looked to Seth, she could tell that he wanted things to change. “Let’s go.”

John smiled at her choice. He flipped a few switches and the ship went off into the distance away from the station at speeds faster than light. It didn’t take much to travel to the Ice Planet, only a few minutes. As John sat there, he watched as the counter changed over. He looked down to a piece of paper that had coordinates on it for the Ice Planet. When the numbers on the counter matched the numbers on the paper, he shut the device down and the ship came to a dead stop.

Seth looked out the window. A large blue planet was sitting in front of them. He pressed a few controls and took the ship into orbit of the planet. “All right, what do we do now?”

John shrugged his sholders. “I don’t know.” He reached behind his chair and picked up the alien device. As he looked it over, the language that he hadn’t been able to read turned into clear plain english. “Look at this.” He said as he handed the device to Seth.

Seth took the device and read what was written on it. From what he could tell, it was instructinos for them to land on the planet at a specified location. He started entering in the location into the main computer. After a few moments, the ship started to descend down to the ice planet.

Chapter Eight: Welcome Home

Date: January 5, 2163
Location: Ice Planet

As the ship kept descending downward, John looked out the window. The entire planet was literally frozen. The oceans were large blocks of ice and the landscape wasn’t better off. From what he could tell, nothing could survive the outside, it was far from hospitable. John hoped that he was doing the right thing.

A few moments passed and Seth gently landed the vessel on a docking platform of somekind. “I wonder what happens now.” He said.

The speakers came to life with a crakling sound. “Welcome home.” A male voice said over the speakers.

If John didn’t know any better, he would of said his grandfather had just welcomed him to a frozen planet. He shot a glance back at Julie. “Didn’t that sound like…”

Julie nodded her head in agreement. What the heck is going on here. She asked herself.

“I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.” Seth replied to her internal question. “Although, that is a strange greeting.”

The voice on the speakers continued to give instructions. “Please shut down your engines and we’ll lower the docking platform.”

Seth did as he was told. He hoped the shuttle wouldn’t be frozen by the atmosphere before they could get their ship underground. After the engines were completely shutdown, the docking platform lowered into the ground. As they descended, the outside cold weather went away and a new environment was introduced to the shuttle. That of warmth. When the docking procedure was complete the shuttle doors opened allowing John, Seth, and Julie to walk outside. As John exited the shuttle he about lost his balance, he wasn’t expecting what he saw. Seth didn’t notice anything out of the norm, and Julie fainted to the ground.

“How?” John asked.

A man approached him. “Welcome home, grandson.” A woman was standing next to the man.

Seth looked to John. “These are your grandparents?”

John nodded. “Yes, when they were…”

“Younger.” Eric replied. “We have a lot to discuss.” He looked down to Julie. “Poor girl, we must have frightened her.”

Seth looked to Eric and Rebecca with questions written all over his face, he was going to have to hear their story. As of right now, he was confused more than ever.

End of Part Two

End Of Earth

Prologue

Date: December 6, 2162
Location: Old Earth Orbit, Space Station Beta

Eric walked down the dark silent corridor and stopped when he reached a window he wanted to take a moment to see the stars. He remembered being a small boy looking at those same stars while standing in his father’s corn field. Eric was eighty-five years old, he had seen many things in his lifetime. Eric’s thoughts were pulled back to the present when he felt a hand on his shoulder, the grip was firm but gentle at the same time. He knew exactly who the person was. “Good evening John.” Eric said to his twenty year old grandson without turning around.

“Thinking about the past again grandpa?” John asked his Grandfather with a smile. He could always find Eric by the window every Thursday evening.

Eric’s eyes began to water as tears filled them. “Only of your mother.” He replied, lying through his teeth.

John walked closer to the window, he looked outside with curiosity. John never had the chance to see what Earth was like. It had been destroyed while he was a young child of two years. His Grandfather had never spoken to John about how the “big blue marble”, as he referred to it, was destroyed and was never allowed to support life again. John had always been interested in the end of his world but could never find an official record of the incident. Sure there were several speculative reports about it on the Internet, but he never believed in them. John could remember asking Eric the important question “How did it all end?” ever since he first learned that there was a planet Earth and people actually lived on it. John’s father had always managed to side step the matter every time he brought it up, so he would turn to his grandfather, who would also side step the question. John had given up his search five years ago when he figured that he would never know the fate of a planet once known as Earth.

Eric turned to his grandson. “John I believe it’s time for you to know the truth.” He started walking back down the corridor. Eric didn’t move too quickly because of his age, this didn’t bother John at all. Ever since Eric was diagnosed with cancer, John had learned to walk slowly at his side. At the end of the long hallway there was a sitting room where Eric often enjoyed reading the evening chronicle. The room was the size of a standard bedroom, at both ends sat two large shelves that held books. The other two walls held pictures of family and friends. In the middle of the room sat two chairs that faced each other with a small coffee table in between them. As John entered the room, he stood in awe. He had never entered the sitting room before in his life. John’s grandfather always considered it private and off limits. Eric led John over to a chair. They sat down across from each other. Eric looked around the room for a moment and then turned his attention back to John.

“John. Let me begin by telling you that I love you very much. I don’t know how much time I have to tell you all of this before they come to get me.” Eric said as he folded his arms.

John was confused and concerned. “What are you talking about?”

Eric sighed and continued. “I am one of the last humans to know the cause of Earth’s destruction. I was ordered to keep it all a secret and never tell another living soul. But as you know, I won’t be with you much longer. I feel that the truth must be made known. People have a right to know how the Earth ended.” Eric leaned towards the coffee table and pressed a button on a small machine that was resting on it. “Begin recording. December the sixth two thousand one hundred and sixty-two. It’s been almost sixty-two years since I took my last look at the planet called Earth. It was one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been. I was born in a town outside of Orlando in a state called Florida. When I was eighteen years old, a war broke out among the great powers, I believe it was between the United States and Australia. I was one of the first to be drafted and put into the service for my country. My first posting was aboard the Space Vessel Alaphei, she was a new vessel under the command of a Captain John Andrews. My job at first was just in the engine room, helping the engineer, making sure things ran smoothly…”

Chapter One: First Assignment

Date: August 23, 2095
Location: Orbital Control Alpha, Earth Orbit

Ensign Eric Tompson stood in a brightly lit room waiting for a shuttle that would take him to his first duty assignment. There were several other crew members that were waiting with him. Eric wished he could wait in silence but that wasn’t about to happen. the room was full of conversation, un-needed noise. Eric tried to block them all out but found it impossible to do. He would have to live with the noise.

“Excuse me” a pleasent voice said.

Eric felt a light tap on his shoulder. He turned around to see a young, blonde, female officer a few years older than himself. “Yes?”

“I noticed that you were standing here by yourself.”

Eric nodded his head “And you thougt I’d like some company.”

“Well, yes.” She responded. “We have been waiting for at least an hour now.” She extended her right hand. “My name’s Rebecca.”

Eric took her hand and shook it lightly “Eric Tompson, nice to meet you.” As he held her hand it felt good, like it was meant to be. He almost didn’t want to let go.

“Is this your first space assignment?” Rebecca inquired.

Eric nodded “Yeah, not by choice though.” He recalled the day the U.S. Government knocked on his door and informed him that his country needed him, that it was his duty.

“Oh.” Rebecca said. “I Came on my own choice. But once this war is over I plan on going back home.”

“You honestly believe Earth will still be around in the same condition after the war?”

Rebecca smiled “Well not exactly the same but it should be similar. That’s the main reason the fighting is being moved into space, to avoid any possible harm to earth or its population.”

“Except to those who give their lives up here.” Eric added.

“Well you know how these things go, someone’s got to declare victory.” Rebecca said. She turned her attention to a vessel that was approaching them.

After the ship docked with the station, anxious men and women started to board leaving Rebecca and Eric alone in the airlock. “We should get going.” Eric stated in a reluctant tone. He started to walk towards the doors but stopped when he felt a hand on his shoulder again.

“That vessel’s full” Rebecca said “Come with me, I’ll take you on my ship.”

Eric was shocked “You have your own shuttle?”

She nodded and led him to another airlock a few doors down.

A few hours later Rebecca’s shuttle docked with another ship twice its size. As the docking process completed, Eric stood from his chair and walked over to Rebecca who was grinning from ear to ear.

“You’re quite the pilot ensign.”

“Thanks Rebecca.” Eric said.

“While we’re on duty, you should refer to me as lieutenant or sir.” She said in a serious voice. “Make a note of it.”

Eric nodded his head, took a step backward and smiled “All right.”

“Now let’s get up to the bridge and report in.”

“Yes ma’m.” Eric replied.

The bridge of the Space Vessel Alaphei was typical for a ship its size. At the very back was the captain’s chair and first officer station, both of which were empty at the moment. In front of them, about five feet away, were the tactical and flight stations. A man waring the rank of lieutenant was at Tactical and a female carrying the rank of ensign was at the helm. Rebecca motioned for Eric to follow her which he did. She opened an access port in the floor and proceeded to climb down a ladder, Eric followed not too far behind. As they reached the end of the ladder, Rebecca walked up to a door and activated a device that opened it.

“These are your quarters.” She said. “I’ll make sure your belongings are brought here as soon as possible.”

Eric nodded “And where do you sleep?”

“Two doors down.” She ran her fingers through her hair, releasing a knot, as she answered the question. “Let’s go meet the captain.”

Again she led the way and Eric followed like a little lost puppy. He was clearly overwhelmed with the ship. It was the first time he had been in space; and it was something he was not accustomed to.

As they continued walking down the corridor Eric noted that they hadn’t passed any other crew members. “What is this ships compliment and crew?”

“There’s six of us altogether.” Rebecca replied. “The captain you’ll meet in a moment, the officer that was at Tactical is Lieutenant Eugine, the woman next to him is Ensign Johnson. Then there’s the Engineer, Lieutenant Jones. And that leaves us to make up the rest of the crew.”

Another moment passed and they were standing infront of another door. Eric read a plaque next to the door. “Captain John Andrews, Commanding Officer.”

Rebecca knocked on the door. A voice could be heard from inside. “Yes, come on in.” The door opened and the couple entered.

An older man worn with age and experience was seated behind a large desk made out of oak. At the moment he was reading over a few typed papers. When he saw Rebecca and Eric he set the papers down on the desk and paid full attention to his officers. “Lieutenant, it’s good to see you again. Ensign it’s good to meet you.”

“Thank you sir.” Eric replied.

Andrews nodded, picked up some other papers scanned them; and then looked back to his officers. “Your files are here and in order. Lieutenant report to the bridge, I’ll join you shortly.”

“Yes sir.” Rebecca said as she turned to leave.

He turned his attention to Eric and waited for Rebecca to leave the room. After she did, he broke the silence. “Ensign why are you here?”

“I was drafted sir.”

Andrews smiled “Weren’t we all.” He said it more to himself than to the young ensign that was now part of his crew. John paused. “Some would have you believe they chose the service when in actuality they joined to stay out of prison.”

Eric was speechless and confused. “Sir?”

“Watch out for the lieutenant, she isn’t what she appears to be.” Andrews said with a dark grin. “But I’m sure you’ll find that out anyway won’t you.” He paused again. “Report to the chief engineer. Dismissed.”

Eric exited the room in a quick uncertain pace. As he wandered around the corridors looking for engineering he quickly realized that he was lost. Eric knew he should of chekced the computer or asked the captain for directions but he wasn’t use to doing things that way. After a moment he stopped to rest.

“Ensign is anything wrong?” Rebecca asked as she turned the corner and saw her new friend.

Eric looked up from his shoes into the green eyes of the lieutenant. How beautiful she is. He thought to himself. “Everything’s fine I’m just…”

“Lost.” Rebecca said finishing his sentence for him. “Yeah I know, come with me I’ll show you the way.”

A door opened allowing entrance into the engineering section. As Eric entered the room Rebecca didn’t follow, she headed back to the bridge. Eric continued to walk further into the room and stopped when he reached the main engine core. As he stood there, Eric started to wonder why he had allowed the government to take him away like they did. He should of ran to Canada, he didn’t belong in space. Or at least that’s what he thought.

“So. You’re my new partner huh?”

Eric turned to see a redheaded female approach him. She was carrying some type of diagnostic tool in her hands. From the looks of it she had been in engine grime all day and needed a shower.

“Yeah I guess so. My name’s Eric.” He replied.

“That’s nice.” She said clearly not caring. “My name is Cassy, but everyone calls me C.J.”

Eric nodded “It’s nice to meet you.”

C.J. Handed Eric the diagnostic scanner she was carrying. “Run a scan on the engine and report back when you’re done. I’m going to go get cleaned up.” C.J. said and started to walk away. “Oh and Eric.”

Eric turned around to see what his supervisor wanted and was hit in the face gently with an article of clothing. “You might want to put that on.” He took the newly made, unused engineering jumpsuit off his head and started to change so he could begin his work.

A half hour later C.J. came back to the engineering section in a freshly pressed uniform. Her hair was still wet from her shower. “Report.”

Eric was laying on his back underneath a console. “The power grid wasn’t hooked up properly and a few other control circuts were burnt to a crisp.” He stood up from the deck and handed a computer printout to C.J. “I took the liberty of reparing the systems.”

C.J. looked through the paper work checking over what her new staff member had done. After she was finished reading, she let the papers drop to the floor. “Nice work, I’m impressed ensign.” She walked over to a computer console and typed up a quick message in her log. C.J. then picked up a small device and put it near her mouth. “Bridge, all systems are go. It looks like your new ensign has passed your test. You may head for Aldeb when ready.”

The captian’s voice came through a static filled line. “Understood, bridge out.”

Eric looked to C.J. with a slight frown. “That was a test?”

C.J. nodded her head. “Yes, we needed to know where your loyalty lies. And you passed with flying colors.” She paused, “Now your next job is to get that communications system up to par.” She handed Eric another small device and he went to work.

On the bridge the crew member at helm keyped in the sequence that would take their ship to the front lines in a nearby sector. The ship left Earth orbit at 100,000 Miles Per Hour. All the crew could do was wait to reach the battle ground. On the map it looked close, but in actuality it was a few days away.

Chapter Two: The Light of Hope

Date: August 24, 2095 – 12 Midnight
Location: En Route to Space Station Aldeb

Eric walked towards his quarters after his first duty shift aboard the Alaphei. He was tired from a hard days work, it was more like exhaustion. As he entered his quarters he proceeded to wash his hands and change clothes. Eric picked his suitcase off the floor and emptied the contents into a series of drawers along a wall in his bedroom. He then sat on his bed and allowed his mind to fully relax. Eric looked to the watch on his wrist and checked the time. “She’s probably still on duty.” He said to himself. Eric laid his back down on the bed and fell asleep. That night, his dreams would be full of his home and the people he missed.

Date: August 25, 2095 – 3 AM
Location: En Route to Space Station Aldeb

Eric woke up and looked to his watch. “Only three hours, what the heck is going on!” He stood up and paced around the room tyring to figure out why he couldn’t sleep. For the past three hours, he kept waking up every hour on the hour. Eric was finding it very difficult to rest, was it because he was in space? Or maybe it was because he was not use to the environment. Whatever the reason he wanted to be able to sleep. Eric walked over to a closet and put his shoes on, he then walked towards the door to his quarters, opened it, and walked out into the corridor. As he turned left he coutned the doors. One. Two. “These should be her quarters.” He said to himself.

Knock Knock. His hands hit the metal with a loud thud. Eric didn’t mean to knock that loud, but from the sound it would wake anyone up.

“I’ll be right there.” Rebecca’s voice came through the door. After a few minutes the door opened and Rebecca was on the other side fully dressed ready for any possible problem. “What’s wrong?”

Eric hadn’t meant for her to go through the trouble of getting dressed and looking presentable. “Nothing, I just was…”

“Lost again?” She replied in a sarcastic tone when she figured there wasn’t an emergency.

Eric shook his head. “Actually, no. I wanted to talk to you.”

“Come in.” Rebecca replied inviting Eric inside her cabin.

Eric stepped inside the cabin and looked around, it was similar to his in appearance except for the fact that it was a little larger. Actually it was twice the size of his cabin. “Being first officer has its benefits huh?”

Rebecca laughed silently. “Yeah, you could say that. But I’m also the Medic aboard this ship, so I need the extra space for my equipment and supplies.” She sat down in a chair. “So, what did you want to talk about?”

Eric also sat down in a chair that was across a table from her. “What were you in for?”

Rebecca was taken back for a moment. She didn’t expect that sort of question to come out of thin air, especially from an ensign. “You wake me up at 3 AM and you want to know why I went to prison?” Rebecca put her hands together. “The captain warned you about me, didn’t he.”

“Yes.” Eric said with a poker face.

“All right, you deserve to know the truth.” Rebecca said. “I lied when I told you It was my choice to join. I was drafted like everyone else was. But I didn’t want o leave my home, so I headed for the nearest border out of the country and left.” She paused allowing the information to sink in the young ensign’s head.

“What’s so wrong about that?” Eric said, knowing exactly where she was coming from.

“Well the commander in charge of my unit didn’t like that very much. He ordered a security squad to track me, hunt me down. When they found me I was put in prison for charges of insurrection.”

Eric’s mouth dropped open. “That’s a little harsh, isn’t it?”

Rebecca shook her head. “The Tribunal didn’t think so. In fact they thought it was too easy of a punishment.” She unclasped her hands and put them on her knees. “They wanted to execute me. I was suppose to be a public example for those who disobey.”

“What made them decide the lesser punishment?”

Rebecca smiled. “Captain Andrews came to my defense. He asked for no fee. Only that I would serve aboard his ship. He gave a good argument why I should live and that it isn’t the time to be killing people who could be used as soldiers. So they let me live.” She stood up and walked over to a table near a window allowing her to look at the stars. “I was placed in Prison Roe 43 and stayed there for a year until the captain came to release me. I became a part of this crew and the rest is yet to be decided.”

She turned around to look at Eric. “I’m sorry, did you want something to drink?”

Eric shook his head, he was too interested in her story to be interrupted by a beverage. “So, what happens when this war is over?”

Rebecca smiled. “If I don’t die during battle, I will be taken back to the Tribunal and executed. Either way it’s a no win situation, at least for me.”

Eric stood from his chair. “The captian can do something can’t he? He helped you once out of the stockade, he must carry some weight.”

Rebecca shook her head. “No, that was one of the stipulations. Once the war is over, I return to Earth and the example will be made so clear that no one will ever think about turning against the government again.” She put her head in her hands and started to cry. It had been a long time since the Tribunal gave their final decision in that court. Somehow she had managed to push it to the back of her mind for a few days, and now this ensign was bringing it all up again.

Eric walked over to Rebecca and hugged her, providing limited comfort. “What about your ship? We could escape aboard your shuttle.”

Rebecca shook her head, lowerd her left arm and pointed to a scar. “The Tribunal ordered doctors to implant a device in my arm so they could keep their tabs on me. If I do anything against their wishes, they can detinate the device which will send a poison through my veins and I’ll die.”

“They sure thought of everything.”

Rebecca nodded in agreement. “Like I said, it’s a no win situation.” She was thankful that someone cared about her condition, but she knew that he couldn’t do anything for her. As far as she was concerned, her life was over.

“Sorry for taking your precious sleep time.” Eric said as he walkd towards the door, opened it, and exited her quarters. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“You mean later today.” Rebecca said correcting him.

“Yeah.” He replied. “Thanks for your time.” Eric walked away and the door closed.

Rebecca leaned on the table as she contemplated the past hour she had spent talking with her friend. “Maybe all is not lost.” She said starting to see hope.

Chapter Three: Ideas

Date: August 30, 2095
Location: Aldeb Sector 56

The Alaphei came to a dead stop in orbit of the United States Main Command Bse near the front lines. Several other vessels were docked at the base waiting for repairs. On the bridge Rebecca was seated at her command station. A moment earlier she had contacted the captain and was now waiting for him to get to the bridge.

Down in the engineering section Eric was hard at work trying to upgrade the ships systems. As the doors opened he didn’t even bother to turn to see who it was, he already knew. It had been the same way for the past few days. Eric hadn’t been bothered, he was getting use to it.

“Hey there C.J. on time as usual.” He said with sarcasm in his voice.

“Morning Eric.” C.J. said ignoring his comment. “What ya working on?”

Eric handed C.J. a printout “Look for yourself.” He said hoping she would approve and allow him to continue the project.

C.J. was impressed with Eric’s work, but decided not to show it. “You’re working on an Faster Than Light travel device?” C.J. asked with disbelief in her voice. “We’re in a war, not an exploration mission.”

Eric frowned at her disapproval. “It’s just that it took so long for us to get here, I thought we might be able to get ships here faster if this system worked.”

C.J. clearly didn’t care what was going on in Erics mind on how he could help out the war effort. “Look, you want to help? Work on a more critical system that we need, like weapons or shields.” She took out a lighter from her pocket lit the computer printout on fire, and threw it to the floor allowing it to burn.

Eric watched three days of work go up in smoke. “All right, let’s take a look at those weapon systems.”

C.J. shook her head. “No time, we are to report to the meeting lounge with the rest of the crew. Captain wants to give us a pep talk.”

C.J. and Eric exited the engineering section and headed to the meeting lounge. A moment later they entered a small room that had several chairs facing each other. C.J. and Eric were the last ones to show up for the meeting. As they sat down the captain clasped his hands together tightly.

“Good to see you all made it, we can now get started.” Captain Andrews handed out pieces of paper to his crew members. “Here is the current status of the war effort on our side. As you know our country is on the loosing end of this conflict.” He paused allowing time for them to absorb the informaiton so his crew might add useful insight to the discussion. “We need to come up with something to increase our force.”

Eric started to raise his hand then stopped knowing that C.J. wouldn’t like his suggestion.

“You have a comment ensign?” Andrews said noticing Eric’s hand movement.

Eric looked to C.J. who shook her head and then back to Andrews. “No sir, I guss I don’t.”

“Nonsense.” Andrews said “Something is going through your mind, I can see those gears turning.” He looked to C.J. who he would have to have a talk with later, and then back to Eric. “What is it lad?”

“Well sir” Eric started. “What about desiging a FTL travel device? We could integrate it directly into our ships systems and it would increase our range and cut down on travel time.”

Andrews thought about it for a moment, “That’s a good idea, but it’s been tried before with limited resutls. People have died.”

Eric nodded. “Yes I know, but I’ve made some improvements on the original design; and so far it looks promising.”

Andrews nodded his approval. “Any other ideas?”

The tactical officer spoke up. “Sir our primary weapon right now is focused laser beams. What about making some kind of missile.”

“As you know Tom, the missiles that we have back on earth are too weak for the shield technology of today. They’re used for land combat, not for space.” Captain Andrew replied. “We might as well be throwing rocks at our enemies.”

Tom nodded “Yes sir I know, but I’m talking about something far more powerful that anything we have right now.”

Andrews shook his head “I’m not sure if we even have the resources for what you’re suggesting. Besides you’d have to develop a delivery system as well which could take months, or even years.” He tapped his fingers on his knee. “Is this all you have?”

The room was silent, no more ideas were brought up.

“Very well.” The captain said. “I have a meeting with my superiors in a half hour. I’ll bring up these ideas to them and see what they have to say.” He looked to a watch on his wrist. “Look what time it is. I suggest you all go and get some rest, we have a big day tomorrow. Dismissed.” At his command his crew left the meeing lounge to retire for the evening.

Chapter Four: A Friend in Need…

Date: September 1, 2095
Location: Aldeb Sector 56

Rebecca paced around the bridge nervously, she had never been nervous like that in her entire life and it scared her a bit. She couldn’t explain why she was nervous, just that she was. Her commanding officer had left his post a day ago and it wasn’t the same without him around, to her there appeared to be no order. If she gave an order to the crew, she fully believed that no one trusted her; except Eric of course. Her fears weren’t imaginary, it was true no one on the ship trusted her. She couldn’t wait to have the captain back.

“Tom, you have the bridge.” Rebecca said as she climbed down the latter that gave access to the lower decks.

Tom nodded his head. “Thanks.” They wern’t going anywhere, she might as well have left him a rubix cube to pass the time.

After Rebecca left the bridge, Tom turned to the helm officer. “So Amy, you doing anything tonight?”

Ensign Johnson turned back to the lieutenant. “Excuse me? Are you asking me out?”

Tom nodded his head. “Yeah.”

“And what do you plan on us doing? There isn’t much to do on this ship in the middle of no where.” Amy reminded him.

“Do you play poker?”

She nodded her head.

“Well I happen to have a deck of cards. Meet me in the meeting lounge after your shift is over, and we’ll play a few rounds.”

She nodded again. “I’d like that.”

Down in the engine room, Rebecca sneaked up behind Eric and startled him when she touched his arm to get his attention. He turned around quickly almost dropping a large amount of engine waste to the deck.

“Did I scare you?”

“No.” Eric said lying through his teeth. “What’s up?”

Rebecca walked around the engine core looking around, making sure they were alone, she didn’t want C.J. ease dropping, a talent the engineer had mastered. Once she was certain no one else was in the room she made her way back over to Eric.

“She hasn’t arrived for duty yet.” Eric said noticing what Rebecca was up to. “She should be here in a half hour.”

Rebecca smiled. “Good. We need to talk, but not here.” She took the engine waste canister out of Eric’s hand and placed it on the floor. Rebecca then took him by the hand and led him out of the engine room. “But first you need to get cleaned up.”

Eric nodded “I’ll go take a shower. I’ll be at your quarters in a few minutes.”

“Okay.”

Twenty Minutes Later

Knock Knock. Once again Eric’s fist hit the door to Rebecca’s quarters. This time the knock was much more softer and she was expecting him. The door opened and Eric stepped inside. Rebecca was again on the other side of the door waiting for her friend to arrive.

“You said a few minutes, not twenty.” She said playfully scolding him.

Eric laughed. “Sorry, I had a lot of engine grime on me.”

They walked over to a couch and sat down turned slightly towards each other for conversation.

“Would you like a drink?” Rebecca asked. “I have water or a water.” She had gotten use to only being allowed the most essential items in space, and when it came down to beverages water was the only option available.

Eric jokingly pondered the option for a few minutes. “I think I’ll have water.” He smiled as she went into the next room to get two bottles of fresh water.

When Rebecca reutrned she handed Eric one bottle and kept the other for herself. He opened it and took a sip. “So, what’s up?” He asked in a casual tone.

“The other night, were you serious about helping me?”

Eric nodded. “Of course. I don’t want to see anything happen to you.” He put a hand on her shoulder showing that he’d be there for her.

Rebecca moved away from his hand. She wasn’t use to having friends that close. “Why would you want to help me?” She was confused by the ensign’s motive.

“Because you’re in distress.” Eric replied. “And I don’t like to see people in any kind of distress.”

Rebecca nodded. “All right. I’ve been thinking over what you said the other night. We’re going to find a way to get out of here when this war is over.” She looked down to her arm. “Whether I die by weapons fire on the front line or at home, I don’t care.” It was time for her to stop worrying about what could happen. It was time to take action.

Chapter Five: Goodbyes

Date: September 3, 2095
Location: Aldeb Sector 56

“Captain’s Log. I have just returned from a meeting with Aldeb Sector Command. they have approved our proposal to help out the war effort. My only hope is that we will be successful in our duty.”

Once again the meeting lounge was full of the Alapheis’ crew. Each of them had been waiting for their captain to return, it hadn’t been easy just sitting there in space doing nothing for a few days. As the captian entered, the crew stood up and went to attention. He waved his hand as if to have them sit back down. “At ease.” At his command, his crew members sat in their chairs. Andrews remained standing, he didn’t want to sit down. John had been sitting in meetings for longer than he wanted to. He looked around the room at the men and women under his command and knew it hadn’t been easy for them to wait for his return. He pulled out a few papers from a briefcase and looked them over. “Sector Command has approved Ensign Tompson’s idea for FTL travel, but have rejected Tom’s proposal for advanced missile technology.”

Tom was upset at this news “Why?” He didn’t want some ensign who was the friend of a prisoner to show him up. Tom wanted an explaination.

“They don’t want the other side to have any chance of getting a hold of the technology and using it against us.” The captain responded.

Tom didn’t like that answer but he would have to live with it. He lowered his head slightly showing that he had no more quesitons.

Andrews turned his attention to Eric who was smiling, he was happy command had approved his idea. “Ensign, you will take a shuttle and upgrade its systems for FTL travel.” He paused “Unfortunately the Alaphei will not be going with you, command has ordered us to go to the front lines.”

Eric was shocked. “You mean I have to do this alone?”

Andrews nodded “It’s your proejct.” He looked around the room. “Unless anyone would like to volunteer to go with him.”

The room was silent for a moment, then Rebecca raised her hand. “I’ll go with him captain.” This could be my chance to get away from them all. She thought to herself.

Andrews shook his head. “No lieutenant, I need you by my side.”

C.J. took a deep breath. “I’ll probably regret this in the morning. Captain, I’ll go with the kid.” She looked over to Eric and then back to Andrews. “He’ll need someone to talk to.”

Andrews nodded. “Very well, gather the necessary supplies you’ll need.” He looked back to Rebecca who was trying to look like she wasn’t bothered by John’s decision. “Radio command, tell them we need a new engineer and someone to help out in the engine room.”

Rebecca nodded her head. “Yes sir.”

“Dismissed.” John said. At his command his crew members exited the meeting lounge in single file. “Lieutenant Eugine and Ensign Johnson a word please.” Tom and Amy stopped dead in their tracks, turned around, and faced their commanding officer who had a deck of cards in his hand. “I believe these belong to you.”

Tom stepped forward took the cards from the captain. “Yes sir.”

“Explain yourself.” Andrews said.

Amy stepped forward. “We were playing a few games sir. To pass the time.”

Andrews shook his head. “Does this look like a game room ensign?” He was clearly angry with his officers.

The helm officer shook her head no.

“That’s right, we’re in a war. Don’t let it happen again.” Andrews said in a cold tone. “Dismissed.” They quickly left the lounge to get away from the captain’s temper.

Down in the engine room, Eric and C.J. were packing up several devices to take with them on their mission. He was glad that his idea was heard and accepted, but uncertain how C.J. would react away from the ship. She wasn’t pleased with his tests in the first place but now she was there to help him out. Was she doing this because she actually cared about Eric or was it because she wanted to get away from the captain. He wasn’t sure.

“Looks like we have everything we need.” Eric said outloud. “I’ll go put these on the shuttle.” Taking two large boxes with him, Eric exited the engine room and headed to the airlock where his test shuttle was waiting.

C.J. checked one last time to make sure the engine core was working properly before she left the ship. She didn’t want the next engineer to think she did a terrible job keeping the core in working order. After her scans were complete she stared at the core one last time as if to say goodbye. C.J. didn’t expect to come back from her mission alive, the captain was right FTL was dangerous. Many people had died from it in the past and here she was trying to help some kid stright from training to test it out again. She walked out the door and continued down the corridor.

Outside an airlock Eric finished loading the last piece of equipment on the shuttle. As he did so C.J. came down the corridor with a scanner in hand. “You forgot my favorite diagnostic scanner.” She handed it to him and he placed it with the other equipment.

“Shall we go?” Eric said to the lieutenant.

C.J. shook her head. “Not yet. Don’t you think you need to say goodbye to someone first?” She was clearly referring to the fact that Eric hadn’t said his goodbyes to Rebecca yet.

Eric nodded his head. “Yeah you’re right.” He started to walk down the corridor toward Rebecca’s quarters. “I’ll be right back.”

Soon enough he was standing infront of Rebecca’s door. He knocked in a soft manner. No response. He knocked again. Still no response. “Where is she?” He asked himself.

“Right here.” A voice called from behind. “So you did come to say goodbye.” Rebecca said as she turned Eric around to see her.

Eric shook his head. “I don’t like goodbyes. They feel to final and closed.” He paused. “How about until next time.” He held out a hand.

“A handshake’s not going to do it for me.” Rebecca said as she gave Eric a hug.

Eric wished that moment could go on for an indefinate period of time, but that wasn’t possible. He would have to let go and get started with his mission leaving the one he cared about behind. “The quickler I go, the quicker I’ll return.” He said still not wanting to let go, but he did anyway.

“All right.” Rebecca said. “Take care of yourself.”

Eric nodded his head, turned, and headed back down the corridor that would take him to the shuttle.

As Eric entered the shuttle, C.J. was in the left pilot chair ready to disengage the docking clamps and get underway. “You ready?”

Eric closed the door and sealed the airlock. “Yes.” He sat down in the right pilot chair next to C.J. and contacted the bridge. “Bridge, we’re ready to disembark.”

Through a crystal clear communications channel Andrews responded. “Understood, releasing docking clamps.”

Eric could hear the clamps being released from inside the cockpit. “We’re clear Alaphei.”

“You’re clear to leave.” The captain continued. “I might suggest you head towards the Comel system; it’s far enough away from the front lines for your project. Good luck, Alaphei out.”

Eric watched out the window as the Alaphei moved farther away from the shuttle and headed towards the front lines where the battle was taking place. Now they were on their own, no more outside contact from vessels, they were to be under strict radio silence. No one could know about their location or project. Eric wondered how long it would take him to make the FTL system work.

“Let’s get under way.” C.J. said as she pressed a few buttons that would fire the shuttles manuvering thrusters.

Eric watched outside as everything moved at a slow pace. It would take at least three weeks to get to Comel. Three weeks that he hoped he could handle away from his friend.

Chapter Six: Testing

Date: September 24, 2095
Location: Comel System

“Engineer’s Log. We have arrived at the Comel System after a long three weeks. Because of the movement of the shuttle we haven’t been able to begin our project until we came to a dead stop. From the looks of it, this region of space is void of anything, there are no planets in view or stations, it looks like a good place for nothing.” C.J. said as she completed her offiical entry for the day.

Eric started to unpack the equipment they would need for the job. “You know, I’m glad you decided to come along.” He said as he handed C.J. a diagnostic scanner. “With your help this should go smoothly.”

C.J. gave a slight nod of her head. “That’s good.” She didn’t really care about Eric or what reasons she had come. She had a mission to complete and was prepared to complete that mission at all costs.

Eric looked to C.J. “You don’t have a lighter by chance, do you?”

C.J. checked her pockets. “No. Sorry I’m fresh out.” She continued to check her pockets and pulled out a match. “I have a match though.” She lit the match and held it towards Eric expecting him to light a cigarette.

Eric blew the match out. “Good.”

C.J. had a puzzled look on her face. “Why did you do that? That was my last match!”

Eric pulled out a long computer printout. “Didn’t want you burn this. Couldn’t take the chance, it’s my last copy.” He handed the paper to C.J. and smiled. “You should recognize it.”

C.J. scanned the paper for a second and recognized it immediatly. “You printed up another copy of your experiment after I ordered you to stop?!” She paused waiting for an explaniation.

Eric shook his head. “No, actually I printed up two copies and only gave you one of them incase you decided to destroy it. Which you did.” He took the paper back from her so she wouldn’t do something to that copy. Although he doubted it. C.J. promised the captain that she would assist him in making the FTL device work.

“Let’s get this thing started.” C.J. said in a cold tone. “I want to get back to the front lines as soon as possible.”

“What, so you can be blown away?” Eric replied. “I want to stay far away from the war zone, I don’t want to die young.”

C.J. laughed. “That’s life when it comes to war kid. Death waits for no one in war, you get shot you die.” She paused. “Keep in mind that we are to be under strict radio silence, no one is to know about this project.”

Eric nodded. “I remember the briefing the captain gave us.” He paused. “Don’t worry, you can trust me.”

C.J. laughed silently to herself. “Just don’t get an urge to call up your friend. I know how close you two are.”

Eric nodded again. “Don’t worry about me.” He picked up a few devices and started to modify the shuttle for FTL travel, a task that would take another two weeks to complete.

Date: October 9, 2095
Location: Comel System

Eric was just finishing up his project tightening the last few screws as it were. He wanted everything to work smoothly. The experiment was still highly dangerous even though he made modifications to the unit, someone could still get hurt.

“You ready?” C.J. asked impatiently.

“Just a few more diagnostic tests.” Eric replied. “I don’t want this thing blowing up in our faces.” He continued to check the system for errors that he had missed.

“Enough!” C.J. said even more impatiently. “We will test it now.”

Eric looked up from what he was doing. “I said I’m not ready yet.” He turned his head back to his work.

C.J. walked up to the front of the cabin and opened up a storage locker, inside was a gun. As she pulled the gun out of the locker, C.J. walked back over to Eric who was facing the FTL device. Click. The gun was cocked and ready to fire. “I said let’s begin the test.”

Eric felt the gun against his head and slowly turned around. “What’s this all about?” He dropped a device he held in his hand to the deck.

“Oh nothing really.” C.J. continued “I had my orders, and you can’t interfere with those orders. Now step aside.”

Eric stood from the deck. “Orders… What orders?”

“The ones you didn’t know about.” C.J. said as she guided Eric to one of the pilot chairs and strapped him in so he couldn’t move. She moved back to the FTL device and pressed a few buttons.

“I doubt Captain Andrews would order you to do this.” Eric said with a hint of anger to his voice.

“I don’t work for Andrews.” C.J. replied, “At least not anymore.” She continued to flip a few more switches. “All right the drive’s on line and ready to go.” As she walked back up to the front, she put the gun down on a console. “There’s a ship waiting for us not too far from here.” C.J. sat down at the other pilot chair and activated the launch sequence.

Nothing.

“What’s wrong?!” C.J. asked. “Why won’t it work?”

Eric laughed. “You didn’t enter in the code sequence. I didn’t want anyone tampering with it.”

“You didn’t trust me?” C.J. inquired.

“No I trusted you completely.” Eric said. “I always put in a code sequence when I program something. Just a simple safety precaution.”

She picked the gun back up. “Don’t forget, I’m the one in control. Enter the code and activate the sequence.”

Eric shook his head. “I know you too well by now C.J. you won’t fire that weapon, release me and we can talk it over.” He tried to unloosen the restraining cords with no success.

C.J. was getting more angry by the minute. “I gave you an order. You will obey.”

“I don’t take orders from you anymore traitor.” Eric said. “You’re an engineer get it working by yourself.”

C.J. started to pace around the shuttle, what was she going to do. She didn’t want to be ordered around by a lowly ensign. She could fire the weapon, but that wouldn’t do much she could use him later on. C.J. stopped pacing around, lowered her weapon, and moved back towards the FTL device. “All right, this can’t be too hard.” She said to herself. C.J. started to tinker with the controls for a while. After ten minutes had passed she began to smile. “Got it.” She pressed a few more buttons which allowed her to control the craft from the aft section of the shuttle. “Firing FTL thrusters.”

The drive began it’s prefire sequence and then began to travel at high speed. “It’s working!” C.J. said. Her rejoicing was a little early however, before she knew it the ship stopped completely. An explosoin erupted throwing C.J. to the front of the cockpit.

Chapter Seven: Message

Date: October 9, 2095
Location: Outside of the Comel System

During the chaos, the restraining cords holding Eric down were loosened. He ran directly to the back of the shuttle and put out a small fire. Eric then checked the shuttle’s systems for damage. The FTL device was partially on-line. After taking the FTL device completely off-line, he checked the rest of the shuttles systems. There were no other problems with the ship, she was still space worthy. “All right.” Eric said as he walked over to C.J. Her body was burned from head to toe, she didn’t survive the incident.

Eric picked up the gun C.J. had been carrying and set it back in the storage locker. “No more violence for today.” Eric said to himself as he sat down in the left pilot chair. He set a course back for the Comel System and fired the main thrusters.

Eric searched C.J.’s body for any type of equipment the other side could be using to gain information about his vessel but found nothing. He placed her body in a black bag and put it in the lower hold.

Eric made his way back up to the top deck and sat back down at the left pilot station. He pressed a few buttons on the console which activated a recording device. “Shuttle Riko Log Entry, Ensign Eric Tompson reporting. C.J. is dead, she tried to overtake this shuttle and deliver us into, what I assume would be, the enemies hand. I am now heading back towards the Comel System to complete testing. The drive is off-line for now, it was damaged but should be reparable. I plan on sending an encrypted message to the Alaphei, hopefully the other side won’t pick it up. I realize that I am violating my orders of radio silence, but I don’t care.” Eric said into the recording device before deactivating it.

Eric typed a quick message to the Alaphei and sent it using a specific encryption system. “I hope she understands this.” He said as he accessed the system that would send his message.

Chapter Eight: Intercept

Date: October 12, 2095
Location: Front Lines

Rebecca sat alone in her quarters, it had been a long day. Too long. She had to reset five broken bones on four different crewmembers of another vessel. Their medical officer was dead, and it was up to her to patch them up, a task she didn’t care too much about. Rebecca was trying to relax for the evening. At the moment the battle seemed to be quiet, the enemy was in retreat, but that wouldn’t last long. They would be back. Rebecca stood from her couch, walked over to a computer console and sat down. She had to organize her files for the day.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Rebecca pressed a button on her console to check the time. The clock read Four AM. What is with people bothering me at odd times? She thought to herself. “I’ll be right there!” Rebecca stood from the console and walked to the door, as she opened it she went to attention. “Captain sir.”

“At ease.” Andrews said.

“Please come in.” Rebecca said inviting her commanding officer in with a wave of her hand.

Andrews shook his head. “I won’t be long.” He handed Rebecca a computer printout. “We intercepted this message headed for your quarters.”

Rebecca took the printout. “Sir?”

Andrews smiled. “It appears that our engineer wasn’t who she appeared to be.” He tapped his fingers against his leg. “I want you to go retrieve him. Help Eric finish the project and report back.”

Rebecca nodded her head. “Understood. When do I leave?” She folded the paper in half intending to read it later.

“As soon as you get back in uniform.” Andrews said as he turned around to go. “And lieutenant. Everything I’ve said about you is wrong. I’m sorry.” With that, he walked down the corridor heading back to the bridge.

As soon as the door closed, Rebecca read through the message that Eric had sent. It wasn’t too long of a message, mostly alpha numerical code that the captain had taken the liberty to decode for her. “I’m coming Eric.” She said as she moved towards her closet to get ready for her mission.

Chapter Nine: Come Here Often?

Date: November 10, 2095
Location: Comel System

Eric sat in the shuttle alone waiting for his friend to arrive. “I hope she was able to decode that message.” He said to himself. Eric picked up the diagnostic scanner that was C.J.’s favorite and scanned the FTL drive. It was stable after seveal days of work on it. Eric had managed to get the drive back up to 100% operating efficiency. He was tempted to test the device out properly but decided aginst it. Eric wanted to make certain Rebecca would be there for the first trial run.

Date: November 15, 2095
Location: Comel System

Another day had passed and Eric was still waiting. “Shuttle Riko Log Entry. It has been a while since I sent that message to Rebecca. I haven’t received a response back from her, I hope she’s all right. The FTL device is working again, I’ve run preliminary tests several and it all works in theory. I’ve decided that if she doesn’t get here by tomorrow…” He stopped his recording as the Shuttle Riko shifted position by an inch. “What was that?” Eric said outloud. He looked out the window and saw Rebecca’s shuttle next to the Riko. Rebecca didn’t waste time contacting him, she docked immediately.

Eric stood from his chair and walked back to the airlock. He pressed a few buttons allowing oxygen to fill the space. After the airlock was completely pressurized the door opened allowing Eric access. As he made his way towards Rebecca’s shuttle a smile formed on his face. He couldn’t wait to see her face.

The door opened and Rebecca came out acting as if they had seen each other only a day ago. “Come here often?” Rebecca said as she reached out to give Eric a hug.

Eric’s smile grew. “You got my message after all.” He let go to allow Rebecca some room to explain.

“Yes, sorry I’m late.” She replied. “I was caught up for a few days in an ion storm.” Rebecca looked around the shuttle. “You don’t have much room here, do you.”

Eric shook his head. “No.” He looked around the room as well. “But I’m not the first officer of the Alaphei either.”

“Yeah, that’s right.” She said with a slight laugh. Rebecca then turned to serious mode. “Where’s her body?”

Eric pointed to the floor. “I put her in the cargo hold.” He turned around and opened a panel on the floor allowing access to the hold. Eric then proceeded to climb down a ladder, Rebecca followed him.

The lower cargo hold was cold and dark. It was used mostly for transporting pieces of equipment and other essential items for the shuttle and a space vessel. As the couple moved through the hold, Eric led Rebecca towards a bag.

“I lowered the temperature so her body would be preserved.” Eric said explaining why the hold’s environment was not set at the usual seventy-five degrees.

Rebecca nodded her head. “Understood.” She opened the bag up and examined C.J.’s body visualy. “She really got it didn’t she. Burned to death, not a pretty site.” Rebecca opened a small pocket on her uniform, pulled out a medical scanner, and placed it on C.J.’s arm. “This will scan her for anything you may have missed when you searched her for a bug.”

Eric shot Rebecca a look. “How did you know I searched her?”

Rebecca smiled. “Because that’s what I would of done in your shoes. You’re an ensign but you’re not dumb.” A few minutes passed and the scanner completed its task. “Nothing else, looks like she’s clean.” The scanner started to beep. “Wait a minute.” Rebecca said.

“What is it?”

“The scanner almost skipped over it.” She pressed a few buttons. “Remember that device in my arm?”

Eric nodded his head.

“I’m not the only one who had one aboard the Alaphei.” Rebecca said.

“You mean she was a convict?” Eric asked with disbelief.

Rebecca nodded. “Yes.” She took out another device and scanned C.J.’s arm further. “The explosion wasn’t the only thing that caused her death. The Tribunal must have activated her device causing the poision to flow. Or someone else might have done it.”

“Someone else?” Eric asked.

“You did say that she was working for the other side.” Rebecca said. “It’s only logical that she found someway to overide the controls on the device and deleted her file from the Tribunal’s computer giving full control to the enemy.”

Eric lowered his head. “Oh.” He tried to figure out why C.J. would turn sides but couldn’t think of anything. “We’d better get on with our mission.” He said walking towards the ladder. Rebecca put her medical instruments away, closed the body bag, and followed Eric to the upper level.

Once they were back on the top level of the shuttle, Rebecca walked over to the airlock and closed the door allowing the two vessels to be seperated. “Okay, we’re ready to get underway.” She said as they walked up towards the front section. Eric sat down in the right pilot console and Rebecca sat next to him.

“No slip ups this time.” Eric said as he held out his left hand.

Rebecca grasped Eric’s hand with a firm grip. “Agreed.” She accessed a few controls and the FTL drive came on-line again. “Looks like all systems are go.”

Eric nodded his head. “The drive is stable, just sit back and enjoy the ride.” He accessed a file in the computer that would allow the FTL drive to work properly and typed in the code sequence.” The computer beeped slightly as it recognized the code. He fired the FTL thrusters and the shuttle flew by at speeds only imagined. The ship was rocking left and right, Eric was barely able to speak. “Maybe I should of added seat cushions!”

Rebecca laughed outloud as she checked their speed. “This is increadible! The drive is working.”

“All right. We’ve proven the drive works, I’m bringing us out of whatever we are in.” He pressed a few more buttons and the drive disengaged bringing the ship to a gentle stop. “That wasn’t too bad.” Eric said. “How far away are we?”

Rebecca checked her console. “If we were to head back towards Earth, it would take us about two and a half years.” She smiled, “We’ve traveled a great distance in only a small amount of time.”

“We should take some readings of this sector.” Eric said. “No one’s ever been out this far.”

Rebecca shook her head. “I have strict orders to report back to Earth orbit as soon as possible. Captain wants to begin mass production of this.” She looked into Eric’s eyes that were begging like a little puppy. “Oh all right, take a passive scan of that planet.” Rebecca said as she pointed to a planet out the window.

Eric pressed a few buttons and scanned a nearby planet. “That planet is full of ice.” He said as the primary scans came back. “It lookes like a highly advanced society… Wait a second, something’s launching from the planet.”

A small device from the planets surface made its way closer to the shuttle and stopped a short distance infront of the ships nose. Eric keyed in a few more sequences that extended an arm from the shuttle to the device. The arm clasped the device and brought it back to the shuttle. “I have it in the hold.” He said wanting to investigate more, but that would be impossible. “All right, we can go now.”

“Comming about 180 degrees.” Rebecca said as she turned the ship around and fired the FTL thrusters to take them back to earth.

Chapter Ten: Time Away

Date: November 15, 2100
Location: Comel System

“Captain’s Log. We have decided to end the search for the shuttle carrying Ensign Eric Tompson and Lieutenant Rebecca Finlinson. The war has been over for two years now and it is time for me and my crew to move on with other sections of exploration. The Alaphei won’t be the same without the two of them. I am now officialy declaring the Comel System open for travel, it is no longer off limits.” Captain Andrews said as he made his log entry for the day.

Andrews looked around his bridge for a moment. It was time for his crew to go back home. “Set a course for Earth orbit, let’s get out of here.”

“Sir.” Tom said. “What about Rebecca’s shuttle?”

Andrews looked out a window, sure enough Rebecca’s shuttle was still sitting there. He had ordered the ship to stay there for the past five years, John didn’t want anyone to move it. “It was part of the investigation.” He said. “But it isn’t needed anymore, destroy it.”

“She wouldn’t want you to do that sir.” Tom said. “And you know it.”

Andrews nodded his head. “Yes, you’re right.” He paced around the bridge for a moment more. “Close in and bring it into the lower hanger deck. After that’s complete, head towards Earth, best possible speed.”

“Aye sir.” The flight officer said.

Outside the Alaphei moved closer to Rebecca’s shuttle and stopped directly above it. The hanger door opened as two arms grabbed the shuttle and brought it aboard. Once the shuttle was aboard the Alaphei moved out of the Comel System and headed towards home.

Chapter Eleven: No Welcome Back?

Date: December 2, 2100
Location: Earth orbit

The shuttle carrying Eric and Rebecca came out of FTL travel and sat motionless in space for a few minutes one thousand feet away from Earth. Inside the shuttle Eric and Rebecca smiled at each other.

“Welcome home to the big blue marble.” Eric said to Rebecca as he gazed down through the window at the Earth.

Rebecca continued to smile. “What a beautiful sight.”

Eric activated a communications channel. “This is the Shuttle Riko to Command Base.” He waited for a response that would never come.

Rebecca looked to Eric “What’s wrong?”

Eric shrugged his shoulders “I”m not sure.” He activated the communications system again. “I repeat, this is the Shuttle Riko to Command Base. Please respond.”

The computer console infront of Rebecca started to beep out of control. Several readouts came from the computer’s print out screen faster than she could grab it all. She tried to read the paper as fast and as accurately as he could. After a few more minutes, she finally understood what was happening. “We’re eminateing some kind of radiation pulse directly towards the planet. All of Earth’s population will be destroyed in a manner of minutes!”

Eric was puzzled. “How is that possible?” He cocked his head back a moment to look at another readout, “That device we picked up is interacting negatively with the FTL drive, I’ve got to jetteson it.” He pressed a few buttons which opened the lower hold. C.J.’s body and the small alien device was floating out in open space.

Another alarm sounded. “That didn’t help, the inner core is being destroyed layer by layer. There’s nothing we can do!” Rebecca reported over the alarm.

Outside the shuttle’s windows, Rebecca and Eric watched as the earth continued to decay until it finally melted down. Nothing was left of the planet once known as Earth.

Epilogue

Date: December 6, 2162
Location: Old Earth Orbit, Space Station Beta

“…And that’s how the Earth ended.” Eric said as he was finishing up the story to his grandson.

John sat there motionless not knowing what to say.

“Rebecca,” Eric continued. “Later found out that the FTL device had taken us five years ahead of everyone else. Your grandmother sure was a smart cookie.” He stood from his chair, walked over to a bookshelf and picked up a picture of Rebecca. Eric stared at that picture for a long time. “A few weeks after we got back, the Alaphei returned and Captain Andrews filled us in on all of the things we had missed over the past five years. Fortunately we won the war.” He paused. “We were debrifed and ordered not to tell anyone about what had happened. How we had destroyed Earth.” Eric walked back over to the chair and sat down. Tears began to flow from his eyes.

John took a white cloth from his pocket and handed it to his grandfather. “I’m so sorry grandpa.”

“A year passed. Rebecca and I were married.” Eric said. “A few months later the Tribunal decided to activate that murder device in Rebecca’s arm.” Eric continued. “They couldn’t do it though, she was carrying a child at the time. So they waited until your mother was born. I lost my precious wife that day.” He paused. “And soon they’ll be comming for me.”

John still sat there speechless. “There must be some way to get around this.”

Eric shook his head. “No, I’m afraid not.” He paused. “Will you do something for me?”

John nodded his head. “Anything.”

Eric stood again and walked over to the wall where his safe was. He opened it up and took out the alien device they had retrieved from the Ice Planet sixty-two years ago. “We were wrong, this device had nothing to do with what happened.” Eric handed the device to John.

John examined the device for a moment. It had several strange markings on it he didn’t understand. As he turned it over three words in plain english were written. Please come back. John looked to Eric with a question on his face.

“I want you to travel back to the Ice Planet John.” Eric said. “Find out why they wanted us to travel back to their planet.” He looked at his watch. “Now I really don’t have much time, only a few seconds. Listen to me carefully.”

John nodded his head.

“Use this room for your research, all of my technical diarys are here.” He paused. “You should find them most useful. Rebecca’s original shuttle is here as well. I don’t have time to show you where it is, but it’s here believe me.” His breath started to get more heavy. Eric looked down to his arm where a scar was. “The drug is beginning to disipate throughout my body just like it did Rebecca’s.” He fell from the chair and squeezed a rug on the floor in pain. “I love you, take care…” Another second passed and Eric was gone.

John knelt down near his grandfather and checked his pulse. Sure enough he was dead.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

John lifted up the chair cushion and placed the alien device and the device that recorded Eric’s last words underneath it. He then walked back to the door and opened it. “Yes?”

A man and a woman in black uniforms were standing in the hallway the man one spoke. “We have come for Eric’s body.”

“Who are you?”

The female pulled a badge out of her jacket. “We’re from the Tribunal.”

John nodded his head and allowed them to enter the room. Once inside, they walked over to Eric’s body and knelt down beside him. The man pulled out a medical scanner and put it on Eric’s head. “It’s confirmed, total brain damage.”

The woman smiled. “Good. Let’s get him out of here.” She lifted Eric’s legs and the man lifted Eric’s arms. As they were moving towards the door the woman spoke again. “What did he tell you?”

John shook his head. “Nothing.”

“Are you lying.” The man asked. “Because if you are we’ll be back for you.”

John denied everything. “No, he didn’t tell me a thing.”

The couple nodded to each other and left the room. They continued down the hallway towards the hanger bay where a vessel was waiting for them. John watched them go knowing that he had a job to complete.
